Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 1B/RHPPosition Projection

08/03/2014 - National Tryout - Council Bluffs (Omaha), IA Jake continues to show as 1B/RHP but currently projects best at 1B for the next level where he has improved his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a slightly above average runner at 7.41. At 1B, he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. He moves well laterally and displays soft / clean hands. At the plate, hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered, mainly to the pull side. Hitting grade will continue to improve as he works to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 75-78 with sinking action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with loose spin and gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with arm side run. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength, works to throw more strikes, and improves off speed stuff. A 2017 grad- Jake has tools that will play at the next level as he continues to improve.

02/16/2014 - National Tryout - Monticello, IA Jake is a well built 1B/RHP that showed consistent ability since his last outing with Baseball Factory. Offensively, he hit from a strong activated launch position and was fluid throughout the swing. He is direct to contact and displayed his solid bat speed. Defensively, he showed his accurate arm and athleticism to field. He continues to be nimble around the bag and has plus pickability. On the bump, he threw with good control and was able to repeat his delivery. As Jake continues to grow and work on his game, he will be a very sound prospect for either spot at the next level.

01/17/2014 - Baseball Factory Spring Training at Pirate City Gilbert is a hardworking player with a positive attitude and plus makeup and continued to show as 1B/RHP at the event. Currently, he projects slightly better at 1B for the next level. At 1B, he shows smooth / clean actions. Feet are active as he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a big / quality receiver. He works to square ground balls up, displaying clean hands as he makes the routine plays. For defensive grade to continue to improve, he needs to attack balls more and play through while presenting hands more out front. Throws are accurate but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, he shows a squared, athletic stance with balance. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He makes consistent contact through a solid line drive approach. Hitting grades will continue to improve as he learns to works to get stride foot down sooner to work on time. Power grades will improve as he learns to use his lower half more. On the mound, he threw his top velocity to date, topping out at 78 mph. Fastball showed a range of 77-78 mph with solid sink. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with tight spin and gradual break. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength, develops another off speed pitch, and works to throw more strikes.

08/04/2013 - College PREP - Council Bluffs (Omaha), IA Jake is a tall, athletic 1B/RHP that will graduate in 2017. Currently, he projects best at 1B for the next level. He attacks ground balls and plays through well, presenting clean hands. Hands / feet are fluid and work well through the fielding process. He consistently showed the ability to pick balls out of the dirt, saving throws. Throws are accurate as he gets rid of the baseball quickly but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, he shows a balanced setup with rhythm. Hands are loose to and through a level swing path. He makes consistent hard contact, mainly to the pull side. Hitting grades will continue to improve as he works to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. Power numbers will continue to increase as he learns to use his lower half more. On the mound, fastball showed range of 74-76 mph with cutting action on a downhill plane. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. Command / control is a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength. With 4 years to further develop, Jake has potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
