01/13/2017 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Jake is a top of the line talent with plus offensive ability and the athleticism to play all three outfield spots, as well as fill in on the mound. His load and stride are powerful to take a big hack with explosive hands through the zone. He stays direct to the ball and has a strong lower that allows him to make hard contact and drive the ball to all fields. His blazing speed makes tracking down balls in the gap look easy and the ball comes flying out of his hand to cut down runners. His hands and feet work in unison and he keeps everything in front, taking good routes and angles. On the bump, he runs his fastball up to 84mph with tail and shows feel for a slider that flashes. His release point and extension through are consistent to show command of his pitches. Jake is a kid who will be making an impact at the next level soon.

01/15/2016 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Jake had an outstanding event at the Preseason All American event where he continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. At the plate, hitting / power potential has improved through an athletic setup. He has raw strength with baseball exploding off the bat when centered, displaying gap to gap pop. Barrel accuracy is a plus as he displays quick hands (89 mph exit velo) through a level swing path. In the OF, foot speed is now superior (6.88 60 time) and he utilizes his quick feet as he covers a lot of ground, displaying range. Actions are quick / fluid as he displays a sure glove. Hands / feet work well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly with life, accuracy, and on line carry to his throws. With 2 years to further develop, Jake will get looks from the top collegiate coaches and pro scouts with his offensive and defensive abilities.

05/03/2015 - National Tryout - Phoenix, AZ Jake showed in the OF for the first time and continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has really improved as he ran his best 60 time, now a well above average runner at 7.04. Defensive abilities in the OF are outstanding as he displays smooth / fluid actions. He utilizes his quick / athletic feet as he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls and reads balls well off the bat, displaying range as he covers a lot of ground. Reads off the bat are a plus as he works to get behind balls and plays through well with momentum to his target. Throws are accurate with life and on line carry as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. At the plate, hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a solid line drive approach. Hitting grade will continue to improve as he works to get stride foot down sooner to work on time. Power numbers will increase as he learns to load more and work more aggressively through his lower half. Jake has the makings of a special type player and will get looks from the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities.

01/13/2012 - Arizona National Spring Training - 2012 (Pre HS) Jake is an athletic 2018 graduate who plays Catcher and 3B/of. Behind the plate he displayed soft/firm hands, an athletic/low/wide setup, he gains ground/centers the ball/keeps head down when blocking and his release is in-line. He needs to focus on the the technical aspects of catching. His release can improve if Jake can eliminate the extra step and his blocking will improve if he avoids picking the ball. In the outfield he has sure hands, takes good angles to the ball, fields the ball out front and has playable range. Jake is a solid fielder with no major flaws. He just needs to work on his all around fielding skills (hands, approach, arm strength, footwork etc) to polish his defensive game. At the plate Jake showed some good things. More specifically he has fluid rhythm, his lower half gets through well and he consistently squares the ball up. He needs to center his balance so he is not lunging at the ball (allow the ball to travel into the proper hitting zones). Jake is a fundamentally sound player who possesses the natural ability to be successful. If he continues to polish his game and make the proper adjustments there is no reason he cannot be a very good player in the future.

07/19/2011 - Cape Cod Pro Select Training - July 19-23, 2011 (Ages 12-13) Jake is a young 2018 graduate. Defensively as a catcher, he has a high 3/4 arm slot with a short/consistent arm action. Developing a more fluid delivery will be a key for him, so long tossing will help him develop a more consistent delivery as well as gain arm strength. Behind the plate Jake has a low/square setup. When receiving, he needs to work on not stabbing at the ball and on developing quicker footwork. With his blocking, Jake does a good job of centering the ball, but needs to work more on covering up the holes. Working on lateral mobility will help his blocking as well. At the plate Jake has an athletic setup and showed a smooth load. His overall approach at the plate is good, but he needs to make sure he doesn't get to far forward as a result of his leg kick. Otherwise, his balance is stable, he uses his lower half while showing a consistent line drive approach. He displayed a fluid/smooth rhythm but his swing path is a little down so he needs to be more level. A lot of these areas will naturally get better as Jake gets older and matures. With hard work, he will be able to make these adjustments.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
