01/17/2014 - Baseball Factory Spring Training in Arizona (Ages 14-18) Jake is a young LHP/OF that will graduate in 2015. Currently, he projects best in the OF for the next level. He utilizes his active feet well in taking proper routes / angles in tracking down balls and catches the high over his proper shoulder. He works to get behind balls and plays through with momentum to his target. Defensive grade will continue to improve as he increases his foot quickness. Throws are accurate with carry as he gets rid of the baseball quickly but will benefit to build more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, he shows a squared / athletic setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed and work through level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel and makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side. Hitting grades will continue to improve as he works to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields and finish his swing. Power numbers will improve as he learns to use his lower half more. On the mound, fastball shows a range 76-79 mph with arm side run / sink. Breaking ball shows potential as being a quality pitch, displaying downward action with tight spin. Control is a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength. Mental makeup is a plus as he plays with a lot of energy and is very coachable. Jake has a lot of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities, possibly as a two-way guy.
