In Jake's most recent Factory outing, he showed even more improvements in his playing ability. The 6'/190 lbs switch hitting C/1B has a nearly identical setup from both sides of the dish. He has good separation, on-plane swing path, and shows good extension. From the right side he is a gap-to-gap style hitter, while from the left side he maintains a spray approach, but appears to be more comfortable from that right side. Defensively at first, he has active feet, covers ground laterally, and has good body control. Behind the dish, he has a quiet body while receiving and has soft hands. Jake has a clean/quick exchange, gains ground to throw - 2.2 pop - and shows an ability to block, but has a tendency to try and pick the ball. In all, Jake is very projectable, can switch hit, and is defensively sound either as a backstop, or first basemen.
10/17/2012 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic
Simpson continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date at 7.79. Feet are active as he works in line as he works through a clean transfer / exchange. He threw his best pop time to date at 2.28. Times were in the 2.28-2.44 range with accuracy on his throws and will continue to drop as more arm strength is built through a long toss program. Receiving / blocking skills show as playable tools that will play at the next level as he continues to improve. At the plate, Jake shows as a switch hitter that is currently better from the right side. He shows an athletic setup with rhythm / balance. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel with the ball jumping off his bat when centered. At the event, he was 2 for 10 with 4 BB as he has a solid eye at the plate. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

Jake is a tall, lanky, and athletic C/SS that will graduate in 2014. Behind the plate, feet work in line to his target through a clean transfer / exchange as he gets rid of the ball quickly. Pop times show a range of 2.40-2.60 with accuracy on his throws. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Receiving / blocking skills are quality tools that will play well at the next level. At SS, feet are active as he squares balls up and displays clean hands. He needs to play through balls more in a low approach and present hands more out front to continue to improve defensive grades. At the plate, Simpson is a switch hitter that shows solid hitting abilities from both sides. Power is slightly better from the right side. He displays an athletic setup with quick hands that generate bat speed from both sides. He shows a feel for the barrel with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered. From the left side, he works to keep hands inside the ball well, utilizing all fields. With 2 years to further develop, Jake has a lot of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.
