02/09/2020 - National Tryout - Gainesville, FL J.D. is a talented 2-way prospect (SS/RHP) who can make things happen on the diamond. Defensively at SS, he maintains smooth/athletic actions and works fluidly right to left though the GB. Hands are presented out in front as he funnels to a quick/clean exchange. Throws are accurate and on a line. With the bat, this RHH displays a crouched/open setup with rhythm to load. Hands are quick as he whips the barrel to and through the zone, squaring the ball up and driving it on a line. On the mound, smith has a 3-pitch mix (FB, CB, CH) coming from a low 3/4 arm slot and free/clean arm action. He maintains good tempo, works at his pace and stays directional toward the dish. FB shows late/hard run topping out at 84 mph. Hitters will have a difficult time squaring it up. Changeup shows to be his best off-speed pitch with good drop/sinking action. This 2022 grad has a ton of talent and is one to keep an eye on as he approaches his junior year.

04/02/2017 - Interactive Video Program - Sanford (Orlando), FL James is an athletic, 2-way player at SS/RHP. At SS, he displays a prep step as he fields Gb's in a square position. He takes quick routes to the baseball with accurate throws to his target. On the mound, this righty keeps his eyes on target as he repeats his delivery. He gets to a solid balance point as he drives his lower 1/2 off the rubber. At the plate, James sets up with an open stance and gets back into a load. He takes aggressive hacks through the zone as he creates consistent/solid contact with each pitch. Overall abilities in his game will improve with work on the following.

Defense
1. Lateral range
2. Develop softer hands
3. Quicker exchange to throw
Pitching
1. Stronger frontside
2. Deliver more strikes
3. Develop CB
Offense
1. Develop rhythm
2. Improve bat speed
3. Extend more through contact

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
