01/19/2009 - College PREP - Tucson, AZ James shows as a two way player as a catcher and SS with a thin frame with broad shoulders that shows projection as it continues to physically mature. Foot speed is well above average as indicated by his 60 time. He utilizes his quick feet well in the infield showing solid lateral movement. He needs to take better routes and angles in working around to throw the baseball with his feet and hands. Glove action is late and deep, allowing the baseball to dictate play. As he learns to play through the baseball with his feet and body will enable his glove action to be presented more down and out in front of his body. Defensive abilities in the infield are near average. Behind the plate, receiving and blocking skills are average. He centers balls in the dirt, utilizing his body and covering all holes. He sets up will and works mitt around the baseball, presenting a solid view to umpire. He needs to polish up on these tools for the next level. Arm strength is near average and needs to get on a strict long toss program to aid in building more arm strength and lower pop times. Transfer and exchange is efficient and gets his body into a strong position. At the plate, Baer has below average ability and power. He shows a balanced approach but has some flaws that are hindering him from reaching his potential at the plate. Hitting grades and abilities will improve quickly with instruction and adjustments at the plate. James has abilities with a lot of room to improve.
