Official Scouting Report

  • Position Projection

07/26/2013 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City James dis a great job at Pirate City in all aspects of the game, especially on the mound. Physically he projects very well as a pitcher. He displayed very nice tempo, athleticism, good balance point, arm action and control. He needs to lengthen the arm action on the backside and he gets short/pushes the ball. At first base James presents a good target, has good footwork around the bag and picks the ball very well. He needs to get lower in fielding position, work on accuracy and make sure he is waiting to see where the throw is going before stretching. At the plate James made his biggest improvement at Pirate City. He showed good timing, lower half, extension, consistency and uses the whole field. He needs to stay tall, shorten swing path and keep the weight centered.

12/27/2012 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Vero Beach James continues to show consistency in his overall ability. On the mound, James has shown some improvement since the last time we saw him. At Vero Beach, he showed a better finish to his delivery getting good extension and glove side lead. His balance point was controlled and did a good job staying inline. He can focus on making sure his landing is not open at times creating his front side to get open. James also showed the ability to pound the zone with two solid pitches, his curveball showed good late movement with tight spin. In the field, James showed a good feel for positioning around the base. He has good body control with active feet but can work on having a lower fielding position. At the plate, James showed good rhythm getting his hands back and foot down. He uses the opposite field well but can continue to focus on letting the ball get deeper. By improving his lower half and using more top hand to deliver the barrel, James should see improvement in his overall hitting skills. With high school around the corner, James has a long body with potential at both positions as he physically mature.

07/25/2012 - Interactive Video Program - Greenville, SC James is a tall, 2-way player with a thin frame. On the mound, James has a short arm action, controlled balance point, and a balanced approach. He has good direction toward home, he lands in a square position, and he is around the zone with his pitches. At 1st base, James has okay hands and feet and he moves well around the bag. He squares up well to the ball and throws with a long / accurate arm to his target. At the plate, James has a square / athletic set-up, good balance, and he makes consistent contact. He can work the ball gap-to-gap and he uses some lower 1/2. Abilities can improve with work on the following.

Pitching
1. Finish
2. Lengthen arm
3. Level off shoulders
Defense
1. Soften hands
2. Field out in front
3. Long toss
Offense
1. More lower 1/2
2. Shorten swing

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
