07/27/2016 - Under Armour Southwest Championships 17U, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One James is a tall, solid prospect who made strides as the week went on. He has solid tools across the board with a sound approach at the plate and ability to make plays at short. He has efficient pre pitch footwork that allows him to extend his range. He fields the back hand well and has a clean transfer to make quick DP turns. At the plate, he shows off sound mechanics and makes hard contact consistently throughout his at bats. His pop shows in BP and getting more in game reps will allow him to translate that pop into game power. James is a good ballplayer with a bright future.

08/03/2015 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 James competed well at the Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City, collecting a pair of triples, a double, and a single in game play. At the plate, he got his hands activated to hit and was direct down to contact generating good bat speed. He was aggressive to attack fastballs and worked to get his top hand through the zone with front side extension. At short, he worked with efficient feet to make plays out in front with a sure glove. He had good body control, worked around the ball to pick his hop and threw with carry to first. On the mound, he threw his FB with tail, spun a 10/4 CB with flashes of depth, and threw a CH from 70-71. He had a good tempo to repeat his delivery, and was loose/free with his arm action. He worked downhill to pound the zone and the ball seemed to jump on hitters with good deception. In all - James is an intriguing follow with two years to further develop.

05/03/2015 - College PREP - Lakewood (Denver), CO James is a switch-hitting 2-way player as a SS/RHP. Defensively, he shows quick/active footwork working lightly on the balls of his feet. He moves around the GB from right to left and gathers smoothly. He has a quick/clean exchange and gains ground toward his target at 1B. With the bat, he shows similarly from both sides of the plate while having a little more power from the right. He has quiet/simple actions with rhythm to load. Swing path is level to and through the zone and he drives the middle of the field and extends through his finish. Working on his timing (being a bit earlier) will help to increase contact consistency and improve abilities at the plate. On the mound, James has a 3-pitch mix (FB, CB, CH) coming from a high 3/4 arm slot. He has smooth mechanics, maintains level shoulders and stays directional toward the plate. He utilizes his lower 1/2 well and drives downhill. FB ranges from 72-75 mph while showing gradual tail. He can hit his spots and throw it for strikes consistently. Breaking ball has 10/4 shape while changeup has slight run and ranges from 63-66 mph. More glove side lead and finish on his follow through will help to improve abilities on the bump. James (2017 grad) is a versatile player who will make an impact on the diamond.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
