07/15/2019 - Cape Cod Select Training & Competition (Ages 14-18) James continues to show shine on the diamond. At the plate is where he shows best through an open setup. Hands are loose and works through a level swing path. He makes consistent contact through a line drive approach with power showing best to the pull side. Power numbers will continue to improve as he works to utilize his lower half more. Feet are active as he works in line to his target with accuracy on his throws. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program and work to get rid of the baseball quicker. He shows a solid setup and sticks ball through the receiving process. He utilizes his body well through the blocking process, centering balls well out front. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best he can be.

07/07/2019 - National Tryout Plus - Lowell (Boston), MA James raised arm velocity (75 MPH), lowered pop times to 2.4 seconds, and showed offensive improvements from both sides of the plate during his last workout. Behind the plate, James has a square set-up, and he holds a good target. He has quiet actions, firm hands, and a clean exchange with a short arm action to 2nd base. Improved blocking and added arm strength will continue to help catching improve. At the plate, James is equally as good from both sides of the plate. From the right, he has an athletic stance, a level swing, and hits hard to the pull side. From the left, James shows the ability to spray to all fields, he has a loose swing, and he makes consistent contact. Hitting numbers can get better with work on timing, a shorter swing path, and using his lower body.

12/27/2018 - College PREP - Rindge, NH James is a C prospect who will graduate in 2019. Behind the plate, James shows efficient footwork and coves up well when blocking. He presents a good target and tracks the ball into his glove. He throws from a high 3/4 angle and works to keep his throws accurate to 2B. Sitting in a more athletic stance can help James improve defensively. At the plate, this RHH sets up in an open stance and gets back into his load well. He works to barrel up the baseball and makes solid contact. James can improve as a hitter by driving his lower half more. Overall, James is a developing prospect who has the potential to further progress his skills on the field.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "present" abilities (tools), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year, using the scale below. However, grades 10-18 are not available for use with High School players (ages 14-18), while grades 55-70 are not available for use with Pre High School players (ages 12-14). These instances are marked as "--- N/A ---" in the "Description" fields below.
