Official Scouting Report

  • CPosition Projection

06/04/2018 - College PREP - Deer Park, TX James is an athletic and talented 2019 Catching prospect. Behind the dish, James starts in an athletic secondary and primary stance. He has a quick exchange and creates momentum in his lower half when throwing to the bases. He presents a low target and works behind the ball when receiving. At the plate, James starts in a squared stance and loads his hands back into the drive position. He uses his lower half, keeps the barrel on plane, and stays balanced through contact. James will continue to improve with experience and we hope to see his progress in the future.

01/12/2018 - 2018 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament James is a solid, strong 2019 catcher with a high motor. Works very hard during games and understands game strategy and how to lead a defense and get pitchers to buy in. At the plate, he shows the ability to be a collegiate level hitter and flashes solid power to his pull side. Smooth at the plate, with a line drive approach he will do nicely moving forward. Excited for James' opportunities moving forward.

10/25/2017 - Under Armour SoCal Classic, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One James has made very impressive strides on the field and is a bona fide prospect for the next level. He has really improved his arm strength to but his pop times down to 2.04 seconds and he has also become a very dangerous hitter. His strong hands allow him to whip the bat through the zone with great speed to show big power to the pull side. He makes consistent, hard contact to spray line drives from gap to gap and had 6 extra base hits during the week. Behind the plate, he is athletic with good footwork to block quickly and work around the ball to receive. He has good feel for the position and shows a quick exchange and release to make very strong, accurate throws. James is a very talented player who can contribute to a team in many different ways.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "present" abilities (tools), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year, using the scale below. However, grades 10-18 are not available for use with High School players (ages 14-18), while grades 55-70 are not available for use with Pre High School players (ages 12-14). These instances are marked as "--- N/A ---" in the "Description" fields below.
