06/22/2013 - Omaha National World Series - Session 2 Wick continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 7.65 runner. He utilizes his athletic feet well in working in line to his target through a clean transfer / exchange. Pop times show a range of 2.20 range with times continuing to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Receiving / blocking skills show as quality tools that will play well at the next level. At the plate, he shows a balanced setup and loads well. Hands work direct and inside the baseball to utilize all fields. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude and works hard to be the best player he can.

06/02/2013 - College PREP - River Forest (Chicago), IL James has made great strides in his game since we last saw him. This backstop increased his arm strength which in result, lowered his pop times (2.15). He gains ground and works in-line toward 2B. At the plate, he shows some pop off of his barrel by utilizing his lower 1/2 well. He hits line-drives and has the ability to hit the ball where it's pitched. James continues to make improvements and will continue to do so as he approaches his senior year.

12/02/2012 - College PREP - McCook (Chicago), IL James is a tall, athletic 2014 catcher. He does a good job of throwing downhill and gaining ground on the throw. Accurate arm, but his exchange is long. This should quicken as he learns to stay down and come through the pitch. His exchange lacks rhythm in general. Narrow feet in his stance and he sits upright as a receiver. Needs to widen out some and add some flex to his top half to allow him to center baseballs better. On the block, he gains ground well and centers it with good angles. Flashes some athleticism behind the plate but lacks polish. Offensively, he hits the ball to the big part of the field and does a good job of delivering his back side. Top half can be a bit choppy—a lot of effort—which pulls him up and off of the point of contact and causes some hook and fade to his results. His body is projectable. He needs to continue to work on athleticism and mechanics.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
