Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 1B/RHPPosition Projection

06/22/2012 - California Select Training & Competition Hickory continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Currently, he projects best at 1B for the next level. He displays proper footwork around the bag with clean hands. For defensive grades to improve, he needs to present hands more out front and play through ground balls more. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. At the plate, power grades have improved with baseball jumping off his bat when centered. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. On the mound, arm strength has improved slightly as he topped out at 61 mph.

01/14/2011 - Arizona National Spring Training - 2011 Jared is a young (2015) two-way player at 1B plus on the mound. He has a solid, average frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature. Foot speed is below average as he must get on a speed / agility program to aid in improving foot quickness for the next level. Feet are active but needs to be more aggressive in coming to get while playing through routine ground balls. Hands are soft and clean but he needs to present more down and out in front of his body. Throws are accurate but will benefit by getting on a long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength plus raising velocities. Offensively, Hickory shows a balanced approach and makes consistent contact. He has some mechanical flaws that are hindering him from reaching his full potential with grades improving quickly with instruction and adjustments. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 50-56 mph on a flat plane. Breaking ball displays sweeping action with loose spin and needs further development to be a quality pitch. Makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude, is very coachable, and has work ethic to get better. With 4 years to further develop, Jared has abilities with a lot of time and room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
