07/16/2015 - Cape Cod Select Training & Competition - Session 2 Jeff just graduated high school and showed some ability on all sides of the baseball. On the mound, he worked downhill and repeated his delivery with a good tempo. He gathered over the rubber and delivered with free arm action. He struck out 4 in his outing with an ability to throw his FB from 68-73, and his 11/5 CB from 65-66. Defensively, he paid close attention in drill work and worked around the baseball to the best of his ability to get his hops. Offensively, he had a good setup and a level path to hit. He worked to boost his balance and stay in his legs to accelerate the barrel through the zone. In all - Jeff will enter his freshman year this fall with his eyes set on making himself a spot on a roster.

07/08/2012 - Select Training at the All-Star Game (Pre HS) Jeff is a 2016 graduate who plays C/RHP. Behind the plate he has an athletic set-up and firm hands but he needs to be more aggressive with his blocking and throwing. A long toss program will help with the throwing. On the mound Jeff he repeats his mechanics well and he competes but needs to slow down at his balance point and get more extension out in front. At the plate he has an athletic stance, short stride, stable balance and he makes consistent contact. He needs to adjust his grip, be more consistent with his timing and use his lower half more. If Jeff makes some adjustments and works hard to implement them there is no reason he cannot be a good player in the future.

11/10/2011 - Pirate City Select Training - 2011 (Pre HS) Jeff Thomas is a 2016 graduate who plays Catcher and also Pitches. He throws from a high 3/4 slot which allows him to make consistent throws. He has sure hands, a stable and athletic set up, active and inline footwork, and is agile when blocking. Jeff has a tendency to turn his head when blocking balls and this will cause some inconsistency. He needs to work on his blocking to and this will allow him to be a very sound catcher. On the mound Jeff showed a consistent arm action with level shoulders, he lands square and is balanced after delivering the pitch, but he finishes straight up and needs to land in a better athletic position. His rhythm on the mound was choppy at times and needs to stay in sync to gain power with his lower half. Jeff is a right handed hitter who has an athletic set up, gets his hands back on the load, has a nice short and squared stride, and his balance is centered. He gets his lower half through and has a level bat bath that allows him to make good contact and hit line drives. His bat speed can sometimes drag causing him to be late with his timing. Jeff has all the skills to compete at a high level. He needs to continue to work on his blocking and this will make him a very sound catcher. On the mound he needs to have better finish and develop a better rhythm to control his body. At the plate he needs to develop a better rhythm and control his timing to allow him to put his whole swing together.

07/31/2011 - Interactive Video Program - Medford (Boston), MA Jeff is a young, catcher / pitcher with a thin frame. Behind the plate, Jeff holds a low target, he moves well laterally, and he has good flexion in his knees. He looks the ball in, his exchange is clean, and he throws with a short arm action with accuracy to his target. On the mound, Jeff has a long / free arm action, a controlled balance point, and good glove tuck. He has a compact delivery, he keeps his eyes to his target, and he keeps his shoulders level. Jeff keeps a still head and he shows a good overall idea for his age. At the plate, Jeff has a square / athletic set-up, a proper load, and a short stride. He has good balance, a level swing, and he works the middle of the field. Jeff makes consistent contact and he can spray to all fields. Overall abilities can improve with work on the following.

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
