04/03/2016 - College PREP - Pittsburgh, PA This skilled/versatile 2-way player continues to progress. With the bat, this lefty shows an athletic/balanced setup with fluid rhythm to load. Swing is quick as he works to engage his lower 1/2, driving the ball with pop. In the OF, Jesse tracks down fly-balls with speed working lightly on the balls of his feet. He works behind and through the ball and has a quick exchange to throw. On the mound, Jesse has smooth separation, stays in-line toward his target and repeats his delivery well. FB shows slight cut as he fills up the zone with strikes. Changeup has movement as he throws it with FB arm speed - helping to create some deception. Richards has a solid all-around skill-set that will make an impact on the diamond.

07/29/2015 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 1 Richards continues to show as a OF/LHP and has improved his baseball abilities. Foot speed has really improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a well above average runner at 7.13. At the plate is where he continues to show best through an athletic setup. Hands are quick and he has strength in his swing with baseball jumping off the bat when centered as he works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields, displaying gap to gap pop. In the OF, he displays proper footwork as he works to get behind balls and plays through with momentum to his target. Hands / feet work well together through the fielding process. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 67-68 mph. Breaking ball displays 1/7 shape with late break and shows potential as a quality pitch as he throws more. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with solid tailing action. Control is well above average as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he works hard and is very coachable.

03/29/2015 - College PREP - Pittsburgh, PA This 2-way player continues to develop. With the bat, Jesse stands in with good balance waiting for his pitch. He tracks the ball into the zone and hits hit where it's pitched. Utilizing his lower 1/2 will help to generate torque and increase pop off of his bat. In the OF, Jesse works on the balls of his feet and moves well to his right and left. He has a clean transfer/exchange and makes accurate throws into his target. On the mound, this LHP has a repeatable deliver with sound mechanics. He stays directional and separates on time. He throws his FB for strikes and works to keep it down in the zone. Breaking ball has 1/7 shape (59-61 mph) with gradual action. Driving off the rubber pushing off with his lower 1/2 will aid in increasing velocity on his FB. Only a 2017 grad - Jesse is a hard worker who still has a lot of time to progress.

11/08/2014 - Hitting Accelerated Training Weekend (Ages 14-18) Commuter Jesse is a young ballplayer who shows the ability to swing the stick. At the plate he is a very mechanically sound hitter with a good setup and stance, and getting to a solid launch position. What makes Jesse a good hitter is his ability to make consistent contact to all fields, especially his ability to hit the baseball to the middle of the field and the other way. Jesse tends to let his body break down during the swing taking away from his athletic posture, to improve as a hitter he needs to focus on staying tall and maintaining his posture throughout the swing.

09/28/2014 - National Tryout - Pittsburgh, PA Jesse worked out both in the OF and on the mound in Pittsburgh. Defensively, Jesse flashes good hands, he has good body control, and he works behind the baseball well. He fields out front, footwork is solid, and delivers the ball accurately to his target. On the mound, Jesse works in good tempo, he separates on time, and is around the zone with his pitches. At the plate, Jesse has a line drive lefty swing, direct hands to the ball, and he centers the ball well with some bat speed.

05/25/2014 - National Tryout - Williamsville, NY Jesse posted his best hitting numbers to date at his last workout in Williamsville, NY. He showed good balance, an activated load, and rhythmic swing. Jesse has good bat speed, solid separation, and good barrel accuracy. In the OF, he has efficient footwork, sure hands, and he attacks the ball aggressively. He shows good hustle, fields out front, and his throws show accuracy to his target. On the mound, Jesse hides the ball well, his arm action is short, and he stands over the rubber in a controlled balance point. He separate on time, lands in a proper stride, and shows simple overall mechanics.

09/28/2013 - Pitcher/Catcher Accelerated Training Weekend (Commuter) (Ages 14-18) Jesse is an athletic pitcher with a short/quick arm action. He displays a controlled balance point, level shoulders, and good direction to the plate. His curveball has a 2/8 sweeping break and his change up shows good sink, but he tends to slow his arm down on off speed pitches. Jesse is able to locate all three pitches for strikes, keeping hitters off balance. Getting a better push with his back side will help him lengthen his stride and increase velocity. This will also allow Jesse to get a better follow through. Jesse is a young hard worker and projects well off the mound.

07/26/2013 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City Jesse is a young player who is very coachable and eager to improve. In the outfield, he showed active footwork with sure hands while catching the ball and accurate throws. He continues to improve tracking the baseball but needs to work on getting behind the ball with his routes to work through it. He can also work on foot speed and having a quicker first step. At the plate, he has a tall stance with an aggressive swing during which he gets his lower half through well. He has good balance but has a tendency to get extended to early and get around the baseball. By letting the ball travel and keeping his hands inside he will be able to drive the ball to all fields. On the mound, his balance point is tall and controlled and his separation is smooth and on time. He gets good run on his fastball and throws strikes. He lands on his target line and finishes his throwing motion in an athletic position. He can work on getting better extension by doing the towel drill, which will help increase velocity. Overall, Jesse shows potential to continue improving and his work ethic and willingness to make adjustments will help him do that.

04/07/2013 - Interactive Video Program - Pittsburgh, PA Jesse is an athletic, 2-way player who plays OF and LHP. Defensively, Jesse has active feet, he attacks the ball aggressively, and he makes plays. He has a clean exchange, and delivers the ball with accuracy from a long arm action. On the mound, Jesse has a loose arm action, he keeps his eyes on target, and he has good direction toward home. Offensively, Jesse has an athletic set-up, a square stride, and he makes consistent contact. He can spray to all fields, gets his barrel through, and he uses his lower 1/2 well. Overall abilities can improve with work on the following.

Defense
1. Field balls out front

3. Long toss
Pitching
1. Balance point
2. Lengthen arm action
3. Finish pitches

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
