10/02/2011 - College PREP - Trenton, NJ Jesse showed similar abilities to those from his time in the Cape. Behind the plate he is a solid target and looks the ball in to his glove. He blocks well and deadens the ball, keeping it in front. Offensively, he uses the whole field swinging the bat with decent bat speed. Offensive abilities can improve if he can avoid lunging and get better rhythm. Jesse will continue to improve with hard work.

07/24/2011 - Cape Cod Pro Select Training - July 24-28, 2011 Smith continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a solid runner at 7.18. His previous best time was a 7.99. Defensively, his feet are active, working in line to his target through a clean transfer / exchange. Pop time has improved too, as he threw his lowest pop time to date at 2.32 with an average of 2.37. He also showed good accuracy on his throws. He can improve on his throws by keeping his elbow higher and by staying on a long toss program to aid in building more arm strength. Offensively, power grades have improved through a solid setup and quick hands that flash bat speed. He works to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields and he also lets the ball travel well to him. He can work on rotating his hips quicker and keeping his balance after the swing. Jesse is very coachable as he asks a lot of questions and is always looking to improve.

11/11/2010 - Pirate City Select Training Smith ran his lowest 60-time to date in Pirate City, lowering his time from 8.23 to 7.99. Defensively, Jesse receives the ball well, and blocked most balls in the dirt during game play. He continues to progress nicely for a young aged Catcher. He made accurate throws to 2nd base, and still sits in the mid 2's for his pop times. Flexibility and added blocking and glove work will help raise Catching grades. Offensively, Jesse made contact during BP and drill work at the event. He struggled some at the plate during game play, but did put the ball in play, and have a couple walks. Jesse needs to keep his head on the ball better, add strength, and improve barrel accuracy for offensive tool grades to get better.

10/03/2010 - College PREP - Trenton, NJ Jesse is a young catcher that will graduate in 2013. Behind the plate, Jesse holds a low target, he looks the ball in, and has ok sway. He deadens the ball softly when blocking, drops quickly to the ground, and covers the "5" hole well. Jesse throws accurately to his target, and can further improve with quicker feet and added arm strength. Offensively Jesse has a loose grip, he gets his front foot down early, and he makes consistent contact. He has okay bat speed and he has a level swing. Hitting grades can further improve if Jesse can shorten his swing and have more direct hands to the ball. Only a sophomore in high school now, he has time to make adjustments and improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
