Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • C/RHPPosition Projection

07/26/2013 - Under Armour Showcase: Baseball Factory's Team One North Swan continues to show as a C/RHP but currently projects best behind the plate for the next level. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. Feet are active as he works in line to his target through a clean transfer / exchange as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Pop times show in the 2.10 range with accuracy on his throws. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Receiving / blocking skills shows as quality tools that will play well at the next well. At the plate, he continues to show as a switch hitter with similar abilities from both sides. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half well. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 72-75 mph with slight arm side run on a downhill plane. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape, with gradual breaking action. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with slight sink. Knuckle ball shows tumbling action. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is gained through a long toss program.

02/24/2013 - College PREP - Mechanicsburg (Harrisburg), PA Jesse showed well defensively during his last workout in PA. He sits in well, his hands are soft, and his feet are quick. He deadens the ball softly, takes good angles, and he throws with a short / quick arm with accuracy to his target. A wider base and not standing straight up to throw can help catching get even better. At the plate, Jesse showed to be equally as good from both sides of the plate. He has a square set-up, good balance, and he uses all fields. He swings a level stick and uses his lower body well. Better timing and more direct hands to the ball will help improve offensive numbers.

01/18/2013 - 2013 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Jesse continues to improve and impress on both sides of the ball. Defensively, Jesse has improved his abilities as a receiver and continues to have a good feel for the catch/throw footwork. At the plate, Jesse is a switch hitter with similar abilities from both sides. From the right side, he is short/simple to the ball with a level path and some extension. From the left, he looks a little more natural with a solid lower half, hands inside ball and works to stay in the middle. Overall, Jesse is a steady player who applies coaching quickly and can make adjustments on the fly.

09/28/2011 - Under Armour Fall Classic - 2011 Jesse is a thin, switch-hitting catcher. Behind the plate, he has a quick and clean exchange that allows him to make accurate throws to second base on a consistent basis. He will continue to grow as a defender as he learns to simplify his movements behind the plate and soften his hand when receiving. At the plate, Jesse is level and short to the ball, but needs to allow his top hand to continue to work through contact in order to create some power in his swing. Jesse is a tough kid on the diamond and has a very coachable attitude.

12/27/2010 - UA Recruiting Classic - 2010 Jesse currently shows better behind the plate than on the mound at his current age. Defensively, Jesse lowered his pop times from 2.36 to 2.29. He showed quick feet, a low target, and he worked with his pitching staff well. Jesse keeps his front side closed and has decent accuracy to 2nd base. On the mound, Jesse is a strike thrower with a FB that has good A/S run. He has long, lean levers on the mound and will grow into his Pitchers frame nicely. At the plate, Jesse makes contact from the left side, however he is stronger from the right. He gets good extension from both sides, he rotates his hips well, and he has the ability to put the ball in play from both sides.

07/20/2010 - Cape Cod Training 2010 - Session 3 Swan showed as a two-way player at the event on the mound plus at catcher. Currently, he projects best at catcher for the next level. Arm strength has improved as he shows carry, life, and accuracy into his target. Pop times were in the 2.43 range. Blocking and receiving skills show potential as being quality tools for the next level. He is a wall behind the plate, keeping all balls in front. Offensively, Jesse shows a solid setup and load that allows his hands to work directly to the baseball. He shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off his bat when centered. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 70-74 mph with arm side run on a downhill plane. Off speed pitches are average.

04/18/2010 - College PREP - Rochester, NY Jesse is a young, skinny, switch hitting Catcher that will graduate in 2013. Behind the plate, Jesse has a good set-up, a soft glove, and has good flexion. He takes decent angles to the ball when blocking, and he gets into a good throwing position before releasing the ball. Jesse's throws to his target are accurate, and with increased arm strength, his pop times should lower. Defensive abilities can also improve by working to gain ground, catching with 2 hands for a quicker release, and centering the ball better on his chest. Offensively, Jesse is currently better from the left side of the plate. He has good balance from the left side, good tempo, and a level swing. He has a level swing as well from the right side, and overall has good bat speed for his age. Added physical strength, and more direct hands to the ball should help Jesse improve from both sides of the plate.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
