01/17/2014 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament Bleday continues to impress. A speedster in the OF, he can track down almost anything hit his way. He plays through the ball smoothly and fires the ball into his target, wanting runners to test his arm. Offensively, this lefty is short/quick to the zone, delivering the barrel with plus bat speed and creating hard contact. He drives the ball on a line to all parts of the field. On the bump, JJ maintains a good mound presence with his tall (6'3"/170lbs) frame. FB continues to sit in the low 80's while showing good movement. Solid lower 12 drive off of the rubber help to use his whole body throughout his delivery. Overall - a solid 2-way player who has a bright future at both positions.

01/18/2013 - 2013 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament JJ continues to shine on the mound. During his time at the Pre-Season Tournament, his FB topped out at 84 mph with a little arm side run. He works through great tempo and shows command of all of his pitches, working the corners well. He pitches to contact and knows how to put hitters away, shown by striking out 9 in only four innings pitched. CB is best off-speed pitch and he mixes it in well. As a hitter, JJ remains short and compact, getting his lower 1/2 through and helping to create pop off of his barrel. He has good rhythm and makes consistent contact with good bat speed. As only a 2016 graduate, Bleday has a lot of time and will continue to flourish in his game.

08/06/2012 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 Bleday continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and the makings of a special type player at the next level. His foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date at 7.40. In the OF, his feet are active as he reads balls well off the bat and takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. His throws are accurate through a loose arm action. At the plate, JJ continues to shine through a solid setup. His hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. Barrel accuracy is a plus with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered. At the event, he was 6 for 10 with a 2B. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 74-80 mph. Breaking ball displays 1/7 shape with sharp breaking action. He maintains arm speed on his changeup showing a plus feel for. He needs to work on throwing more strikes with all his pitches to continue to rise stock on the mound.

04/01/2012 - College PREP - Pittsburgh, PA JJ is a young, tall LHP/OF with a ton of athletic abilities that will graduate in 2017. Currently, he projects slightly best in the OF but has an upside on the mound as well. Feet are quick / aggressive as he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He reads balls well off the bat and flashes range but needs to work on getting behind balls more to improve defensive grade. Throws are accurate with carry as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. At the plate, Bleday displays an athletic setup with rhythm. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed as he sprays the ball to all fields. Barrel accuracy is a plus with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 78-82 mph with late life as he works on a slight downhill plane. He maintains arm speed on his changeup showing a feel for with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 2/8 shape with early break as he needs to develop more extension to improve pitch. With 4 years to further develop, JJ has the makings to be a special type player that will get looks from the collegiate coaches.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
