04/05/2009 - College PREP - Costa Mesa (Los Angeles), CA Joel is an OF/C who comes to the diamond with better than average size for his age. As a C, he blocks with his head down, has good lateral movement, is quick off his knees, and stays low. He has a good pre-pitch set up, has an efficient glove to hand transfer, and is accurate with his throws. To become an even better C, Joel needs to widen his stance, square up to the pitcher, and extend glove to avoid getting handcuffed. When throwing, Johnson lands on a stiff front knee, throws a little uphill, and lacks some carry to 2B. In the OF, Johnson needs more preliminary movement for better jumps to ball, he needs to get over his front side on throws, and eliminate short arming the ball. At the plate, Joel loads up well and throws hips for adequate power, he makes consistent contact and hits to all fields. For Johnson to take his hitting to the next level, he needs to eliminate his high elbow to generate more bat speed, eliminate the wrapping of his barrel, and transfer more weight when throwing hips.
