06/24/2017 - Omaha National World Series - Session 2 (Ages 14-18) Joel continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities with a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. At 1B, defensive abilities have improved as he displays smooth / fluid actions. He displays proper footwork around the bag and is a big receiver, displaying clean hands. He works to square ground balls up through an aggressive approach. Glove action is soft but will benefit by presenting more out front. At the plate, he continues to shine as he improved power potential through an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields with gap-to-gap pop. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 70-74 mph with cutting action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with sinking action. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is gained through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he is extremely coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

04/09/2017 - College PREP - Plano (DFW), TX Joel is a tall, lanky 1B/RHP who a promising future on the diamond. At the plate is where he shows best, displaying well above average hitting abilities with solid power potential through an athletic setup. Hands are quick (85 mph exit velocity) and work through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields and shows a plus feel for the barrel. Power will increase as he works to utilize his lower half more efficiently. At 1B, he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Glove action is soft / sure but will benefit by presenting more out front. Feet are active as he attacks balls, playing through well. Range will increase as he improves foot quickness. On the mound, delivery is sound / repeatable allowing his arm action to work free to the plate. He shows good tempo through a strong balance point and throws from a high 3/4 arm slot. Fastball showed a range of 76-78 mph with heavy action on a downhill plane. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
