09/10/2011 - Accelerated Hitting Weekend (Pre-High School) Joey worked very hard and did a great job at the hitting camp. He sets up in an athletic position with his lower half, feet slightly open, hands in a comfortable spot. Would like to see him have slightly better posture in his upper body getting his chest over his knees a bit more. When he strides and loads he does a very good job of getting his hands back into a strong hitting position however he tends to take a stride that is too long. We would like to see him shorten his stride a little bit which will allow him to get his stride foot down sooner so that he can allow his hips and hands to get started. He stays balanced throughout the swing and uses his lower body well, locking out with his lead leg and rotating his hips through properly. He takes a level swing and shows the ability to hit line drives. One area he will really need to work on is eliminating his bat drag. He has a strong tendency to pull the bat to the ball which causes his elbows to lead and his barrel to drag behind. This adds length to his swing and will get him beat when he moves up to higher levels. Overall Joey has good balance and coordination and a lot of the components in place to be a very productive hitter however he does have a few adjustments to make. If he can correct the items listed above he should develop into a very good hitter.

09/03/2011 - Accelerated Infield Weekend (Pre-High School) Joey did a very good job for us at the camp. He has a good idea of what he is doing in the infield and was able to take the coaching and put it into effect quickly. He displayed sound footwork, approaches the ball from the right side, and charges the ball correctly. He has sure hands and is able to reach a consistent, sound fielding position. While he does have a good amount of body control we would like to see him work on throwing on the run a bit more. He showed that he can do it he just needs to get more consistent and comfortable with this skill. He picked up the double play feed skill quickly and is proficient with it. Will need to work on his double play pivots a bit more to get comfortable with the exchange and quicker. Will also need to get more comfortable working with the bag between his feet, a skill that is imperative for all middle infielders. Lastly, Joey has an adequate arm at present. Working with a long toss program to help improve his overall arm strength would be a good idea for him. Overall Joey has a good foundation to be a good young infielder. His technique is solid and his overall feel for the position is good.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
