10/13/2013 - College PREP - Gambrills, MD Joey improved his power grades at the plate, now showing solid average numbers through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He makes consistent hard contact, mainly to the pull side. For hitting grades to continue to improve, he needs to work to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. Behind the plate, pop times showed in the 2.15 range with accuracy on his throws. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Receiving / blocking skills show as quality tools that will play well at the next level.

10/24/2012 - Arizona Freshman/Sophmore Fall Classic Joey's most recent Factory event allowed him to showcase his talents in a tournament atmosphere. The small/athletic frame, 2015 catcher played well, offensively and defensively. He was 4 for 10 in the tournament and was a "true gamer" according to all his coaches. He has decent blocking mechanics, a clean transfer, and does a good job at recovering after blocking. His arm is short and compact and has room for further development. Working on his footwork on his throws to 2nd will allow for greater carry. Offensively, he has good balance, a controlled stride, decent bat speed and good extension through contact. Becoming more athletic in his stance and leveling his shoulders will help his swing path stay in the strike zone as long as possible. Becoming more vocal behind the plate and working on his initial setup with a low target are two aspects of his game we feel he can improve on and see immediate changes. Overall, Joey is a ball player, a hard worker, and an instinctual baserunner.

09/24/2011 - Accelerated Pitching/Catching Weekend (Commuter) Physically, Joe showed good athleticism, smooth movements, and quick feet throughout all of the drills. That good footwork will help him get all of his body weight into his throws, which will help his ball carry further. Joe received the ball very well all weekend. He has soft hands and good body control. I would like to see him receive the ball a little closer to his body that would help his transfer to throw happen even quicker.

11/11/2010 - Pirate City Select Training Joey is a young, athletic Catcher who will graduate in 2015. Defensively, Joey has good actions, he blocks and receives well, and he looks the part. He showed good hustle in practice and game play, and can throw accurately with good spin to his target. Continued work on speed, agility, and arm strength will help Catching skills improve. At the plate, Joey is a patient hitter with good balance and direct hands to the ball. The ball comes off the bat well, he hits well for his current size, and he will only get better with age and maturity.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
