Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • OF/RHPPosition Projection

01/27/2013 - National Tryout - San Diego, CA John showed well both on the mound and in the OF during his last workout. On the hill, John has a loose arm action, he works to his balance point well, and he has on-time separation. He has a compact delivery, good command, and he lands in a proper position. In the OF, John has sure hands, fluid footwork, and he fields in a square position. He moves well to the ball and has accuracy to his target. Offensively, John has a square set-up, a short swing, and a still head. He swings in good rhythm and lets the ball travel well.

11/08/2012 - Baseball Factory Training & Competition in Arizona Deforest continues to show as a RHP/OF at the event. In the OF, he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls as he works to get behind balls, playing through well. He displays fluid, athletic actions in the OF but needs to build more foot quickness to continue to improve defensive grade. Throws are accurate, flashing carry as he will benefit by continuing to build arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, John shows a balanced setup with rhythm. Hands are loose, quick and work through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel through a line drive approach. At the event, he was 2 for 6. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 74-77 mph with solid arm side run. Breaking ball has improved, displaying 10/4 shape with late breaking action. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with fading action. Control is a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

09/09/2012 - College PREP - Azusa, CA John is a tall athletic OF/RHP. In the field, John displays soft hands with a clean exchange and agile range. John gets good use out of his legs and body on his throws working through the ball getting good extension. He works behind the ball well and shows good bend in his body. Fielding grades will continue to improve with a more explosive first step to the baseball. On the mound, fastball ranges between 74-77mph with good arm side run. Curveball has a sharp 10/4 break with good depth and the ability to throw for strikes. Arm action is sound with good extension and a complete finish. His balance point is solid, separation is on time, and he has a square landing. John can continue to focus on building arm strength through long toss and keeping his head on target. With 4 years to further develop, John shows ability with room to continue to improve and play at the next level.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
