Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • LHP/OFPosition Projection

12/27/2013 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City John is a lengthy LHP/OF that showed very well on the bump, in his latest Baseball Factory outing. He threw 3 innings and showed an ability to mix pitches - with a FB (78 MPH), 10/4 CB (60-62 MPH) and a CH from 66-68 MPH. Dudley made pitchers chase with two strikes and had good deception with his length. He delivery was repeatable and he shows potential with added lower half strength. Defensively, he made the routine plays with soft hands. He got to balls well taking decent angles, but could improve his footwork and quickness. Offensively, he tries to stay up the middle with his approach and stays level with the barrel. In all - John is a good kid that projects best on the bump.

11/03/2013 - College PREP - Vinton (Roanoke), VA John is a lean, athletic LHP/OF that will graduate in 2015. Currently, he projects best on the mound for the next level. Delivery is sound / repeatable as he uses his lower half well and allows his arm action to work loose and free to the plate through a 3/4 arm slot. Arm strength is at a solid as indicated by his top velocity of 81 mph. Fastball shows a range of 75-81 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball is outstanding displaying 2/ shape with late / sharp break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with tailing action. Off speed stuff show as quality pitches that will get outs at the next level. Command/control are outstanding as he throws strikes with all his pitches and locates to both sides of the plate. In the OF, he utilizes his athletic feet well in taking proper routes / angles in tracking down balls as he reads balls well off the bat. Defensive grade will continue to improve as he works to get behind balls more and plays through with momentum to his target. At the plate, Dudley squared / upright setup. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path. He makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side. For hitting grades to continue to improve, he needs to work to stay inside the ball to utilize all fields. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. With 2 years to further develop, John has an upside on the mound and will get looks from the collegiate coaches with his abilities.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
