Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/OFPosition Projection

01/12/2018 - Baseball Factory National Spring Training at Pirate City John continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. On the mound, delivery is sound / repeatable allowing his arm action to work well to the plate. Arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 68 mph. Fastball showed a range of 64-68 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. Control is well above average as he throws strikes, locating to both sides of the plate. Getting on a long toss program to develop more arm strength will aid in improving abilities on the mound. In the OF, he displays smooth actions. Feet are aggressive as he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He reads balls well off the bat and works to get behind balls but needs to play through with momentum to his target. Range will increase as he improves foot quickness. At the plate he shows an open setup. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path. He works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

12/17/2017 - College PREP - Madison (NYC), NJ John is a thin, 2-way player who will graduate in 2018. On the mound, John has a clean arm circle, he keeps his eyes on target, and he shows some glove side lead. He has good direction, lands in a square position, and finishes with his chest over his front knee. Abilities on the mound can improve if John can use more lower 1/2, improve his separation, and get more extension on his pitches. In the OF, John has active feet, he fields in a low/athletic position, and his exchange is clean and quick. He has a loose arm action and throws with consistency and momentum toward his target. Smoother footwork, more crow hop, and continuing to add arm strength will help defensive skills improve. At the plate, John has a square/athletic set-up, a proper stride, and good load. He has some rhythm and puts the bat on the ball. Better timing, balance, and added bat speed will help hitting get better.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
