Official Scouting Report

  • RHP/1BPosition Projection

06/17/2018 - College PREP - Kansas City, KS John is and athletic and strong 2020 2-way prospect. At 1B, John is on time with his prep step and works off the bag well. He makes the routine play, shows good footwork on double plays, and picks the ball out of the dirt well. At the plate, John starts in an athletic stance and loads his hands back into the launch position. He hits off a firm front side, shows potential pop to the pull side, and stays balanced through contact. On the bump, John gathers over the rubber, separates on time, and has a clean arm action. He shows good tempo and works downhill. John will continue to improve with experience and we hope to see his progress in the future.

07/24/2016 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 1 John continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity at 74 mph. Fastball shows a range of 72-74 mph with arm side run. Getting on a long toss program to develop more arm strength will aid in improving abilities on the mound. At 1B, he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Hands are clean and he presents on time and out front. Feet are aggressive as he attacks balls and plays through with his body. At the plate, he shows an open, athletic setup. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path. He works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will continue to improve as he works to utilize his lower half more aggressively. At the event, he was 2 for 7 with 5 BB as he shows a solid eye and patient approach. Overall, John has a lot of potential with time and room to continue to progress his game.

06/05/2016 - College PREP - Kansas City, KS Harrick continues to work hard on his skills. With the bat, this righty steps into the box looking to swing it with an aggressive approach. He gets loaded, swings on a level path and drives the ball back up the middle of the field. Working to be more direct with more bat speed will help to increase power. At 1B, John hustles to GB's his to his right and left. He makes the plays with soft bands and gathers well. On the mound, this RHP gets good lower 1/2 leg drive off of the rubber and works downhill in-line toward the plate. FB now tops out at 71 mph while showing slight cutting action. Breaking ball has 10/4 shape with early action. CB will improve with a more consistent release point out in front. A 2020 grad - John has upside with still a ton of time to progress.

12/20/2015 - Baseball Factory Winter Classic - Session 1 John is a very coachable player who works hard day in and day out. He has a good feel for the game with a high baseball IQ. On the mound, this righty works to a controlled balance point, has smooth separation and stays directional toward the dish. FB has slight tail as he fills up the zone with strikes. Breaking ball has 11/5 shape and compliments his FB well. He throws strikes and competes. At 1B, John hustles to GB's his to his right and left, fielding the ball cleanly. He is sure handed and gathers well. With the bat, this RHH has rhythm to load and waits for his pitch. He engages his lower 1/2, hits the ball where it's pitched and sprays it to all parts of the field. More power potential is there with more extension through contact. Harrick has a ton of upside with a lot of time to develop.

09/06/2015 - College PREP - Kansas City, KS John is a young, thick RHP/1B that will graduate in 2020 with a promising future on the diamond. Currently, he projects best at 1B for the next level. He shows proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Feet are active as he moves well laterally, displaying range. Hands are soft / clean and he consistently showed the ability to pick balls out of the dirt, saving throws. Defensive abilities will continue to improve as he works to present hands more out front and increases foot quickness. At the plate, he shows an athletic setup with balance. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path, creating extension. He uses his lower half well and makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side. Hitting grade will continue to improve as he works to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 62-67 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup but needs to develop more movement on pitch. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength and works to throw more strikes. With 5 years to further develop, John has a lot of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities as he continues to develop.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
