Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/SSPosition Projection

10/21/2009 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic - 2009 John is a young two-way player on the mound plus at 3B with a tall, lean frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature. Foot speed is average as he needs to get on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. Feet are active and aggressive in coming to get, playing through the baseball with feet / hands with a solid glove action. He moves well laterally, displaying range as he shows solid average defensive abilities at 3B. Arm strength is near above average as indicated by his top velocity of 85 mph on the mound with throws showing life, carry, and accuracy across the diamond. Hands and feet work well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. At the plate, Long shows as a switch hitter that only projects from the right side. Hitting abilities are solid average with slightly above average power from the right side with near average abilities and power from the left side. As a RHH, hands are quick and direct to the ball, flashing bat speed as he shows a solid feel for the barrel. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 80-85 mph with late cutting action. Breaking ball is best off speed pitch showing above average while displaying downward tilt, tight spin with gradual break. Changeup shows a solid feel for with sink and fading action. Command and control is a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. With 2 years to further develop, John has an upside, projecting best on the mound where he will get looks from the collegiate coaches.

09/20/2009 - College PREP - Guyton, GA John is a young two-way player on the mound plus at SS with an athletic looking frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature and fill out. Foot speed is average and he will benefit by getting on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. Feet are active and aggressive in working to get around balls and playing through with his momentum to his target. Hands are soft, clean, and sure in making all the plays as he has an idea in his play, displaying near above average defensive abilities in the middle of the IF. Hands and feet work well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Arm strength is near above average showing life, carry, and accuracy on his throws across the diamond. At the plate, Long is a switch hitter that shows best from the left side. Hitting abilities and power are average from the left side with near average abilities and power from the right side. Swing path is level but has some mechanical flaws that are hindering him from reaching his full potential with grades improving from both sides with instruction and adjustments. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 79-83 mph. Breaking ball is best off speed pitch, displaying 12/6 shape with tight spin and late breaking action and will be a quality pitch at the next level. Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
