Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHPPosition Projection

11/02/2014 - College PREP - Vinton (Roanoke), VA This talented RHP continues to impress. He works at a fluid tempo and pounds the zone with strikes. FB now cracks the mitt topping out at 86 mph. Breaking ball is solid out pitch showing 11/5 shape with good break. He gets good lead arm extension, good glove tuck and finishes out over his front side. He mixes well and works both sides of the plate. Offensively, John shows a balanced approach with quiet/simple actions. He is short to contact and drives the ball on a line. A strong/projectable RHP - Reith will rack up some innings and challenge hitters every time he toes the rubber.

06/21/2014 - Omaha National World Series - Session 2 John showed on the mound and at 3B for the first time at the event and shows solid play at both positions. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a solid 7.38. Hands are clean and moves well laterally. He attacks balls and plays through well with his body. At the plate, he shows a balanced setup. Hands are loose and works through a level swing path. Hitting grade will continue to improve as he works to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. At the event, he was 4 for 11 with 2 2B. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he through his top velocity at 82 mph. Fastball showed a range of 77-82 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with breaking action. He shows a feel for his changeup as he maintains arm speed, displaying sinking action. Off speed stuff show as quality pitches that will get outs at the next level. Control is a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is gained. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a great personality, is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

03/23/2014 - College PREP - Ashburn (DC), VA John is a lean RHP that will graduate in 2015. Delivery is repeatable as he uses his lower half well and allows his arm action to work long and well to the plate through a high 3/4 arm slot. Arm strength is above average as indicated by his top velocity of 80 mph. Fastball shows a range of 76-80 mph. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for but needs to develop a little more movement. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. John has abilities and will continue to improve with hard work. He will be a good addition to a college program once he graduates.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
