Official Scouting Report

  • SS/RHPPosition Projection

12/27/2018 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City - Session 2 (Ages 14-18) John is a lean, athletic SS who will graduate in 2019. At SS, he displays clean / smooth actions. Feet are active as he displays proper footwork as he works to square ground balls up but needs to play through more with his body. Glove action is clean but needs to present more out front. He moves well laterally with range improving as he improves foot quickness. Throws are accurate across the diamond but he will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, he shows an open setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude, works hard, and is very coachable. John has abilities with a lot of room to continue to progress his game.

10/21/2018 - College PREP - Texarkana, TX John is a SS/RHP prospect who will graduate in 2019. In the field, John covers ground well and flashes good lateral range. He fields in an athletic position and makes a clean exchange, keeping his throws on-line to his target. Presenting his hands to the ball sooner can help John improve defensively. At the plate, this switch hitter shows a solid swing from both sides. He sets up in a square stance and takes his stride on time. He is fluid getting back into his load and leads well with his lower half. He takes a level swing with fast bat speed, leading to solid contact and gap to gap pop. John can improve as a hitter by activating his hands in his load more. On the mound, John gathers over the rubber and separates his hands on time. He stays inline towards the plate and drives his lower half well. John shows a three pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 72mph with arm side run. Breaking ball sits from 58-61mph with 11-5 break. Changeup sits from 68-69mph with tailing action. Loosening his arm action can help John improve as a pitcher. Overall, John is a developing prospect who has the potential to further progress his skills on the field.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
