12/11/2020 - Baseball Factory Academic All-American Tournament John is a two-way prospect (RHP/SS) who continues to progress. At SS, he uses quick footwork with good lateral range. He has a clean arm action, throwing from a 3/4 arm slot with zip across the diamond. He has improved his power at the plate recording an exit velo of 83, his highest to date. He uses his lower half well and has an aggressive swing with the ability to spray the ball to all parts of the field. On the mound, he showed a solid two pitch mix. FB ranged from 76-78 with good movement followed by a CB with 11-5 shape showing a tight spin and good depth. John has a loose/clean arm action showing good extension on his pitches. He uses his size to his advantage, throwing downhill from a 3/4 arm slot. Kasten is a hard worker who has skills with a ton of upside.

01/17/2020 - Baseball Factory's Spring Training Tournament at Pirate City (Ages 14-18) John continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. At SS, feet are active but needs to attack balls more and play through with his body. Glove action is firm but needs to present more out front. He moves well laterally with range improving as he continues to improve foot quickness. At the plate, power potential has improved through a squared setup. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive swing path. He works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. At the event, he was 2 for 5 with a 2B. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 68-70 mph with tailing action. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

07/23/2019 - National Tryout Plus - Rindge, NH John continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and has a promising future in the diamond. At SS, defensive abilities have improved as he displays clean / smooth actions. Feet are active as he displays proper footwork as he works to square ground balls up, presenting hands as he makes the plays. Range will increase as he improves his foot speed. At the plate, hitting / power potential has improved through a squared setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will continue to improve as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 72 mph. Fastball showed a range of 70-72 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup but throws too hard, resembling fastball. Getting on a long toss program to develop more arm strength will aid in improving abilities on the mound.

02/23/2019 - Mid Atlantic Regional Hitting, Pitching & Catching Combined Weekend (Ages 14-18) Johnathan is an athletic and talented 2022 prospect that was eager to learn and made several adjustments throughout the weekend. On the bump, Johnathan has three pitches and good tempo in his delivery. His fastball tops out at 66 mph, his curveball has medium break, and his changeup cuts. He gets balanced over the back leg, separates on time, and works north to south in his delivery. He needs to continue to keep his shoulder lined up with his target and riding his back leg toward the plate will improve his downhill velocity. At the plate, Johnathan starts in a tall and open stance. He loads his hands back into the drive position, and stays balanced through contact. He's aggressive to the ball but needs to be more consistent on making hard contact on fastballs in the strike zone. Creating backside drive with his lower half and attacking the inside part of the ball will improve his ability to create whip in the barrel. Johnathan will continue to improve with experience and we hope to see his progress in the future.

12/27/2018 - National Tryout Plus - Rindge, NH John showed good size and a lean frame working out both on the mound and at SS. On the bump, John topped out at 63 MPH, he has a simple delivery, and good direction toward home. He mixes his pitches well and is around the zone. Defensively, John has active feet, he fields aggressively, and he keeps the ball in front of his body. He has a clean exchange and throws with consistency from a long arm action to his target. Offensively, John has a square set-up, a loose grip, and solid bat speed. He can spray to all fields and uses some lower body.

07/06/2018 - Cape Cod Select Training & Competition (Ages 12-14) John showed hitting improvements and a spike in radar velocity on the mound during his time in the Cape. At the plate, John has good balance, a tall set-up, and he creates solid leverage. He swings on plane, makes square contact, and can spray to all fields. On the hill, radar velocity increased to 61 MPH. John has good mechanics, a clean arm circle, and works at a good pace. He gets good extension on his pitches and finishes in a complete position. At SS, John moves well to the ball, he centers it well, and works hard to get in a good fielding position.

02/10/2018 - Mid Atlantic Regional Accelerated Hitting Weekend (Ages 12-14) John is a respectful and coachable prospect that made several adjustments during the hitting accelerated training weekend. At the plate, John starts in an open stance and recognizes pitches well. He tracks the ball, consistently finds the barrel, and uses the whole field. Continuing to attack the inside part of the ball and using the backside will allow him to stay balanced through contact. Creating pre pitch rhythm and loading his hands back to the launch position will allow him to be on time. John will continue to improve with experience and we hope to see his progress in the future.

10/07/2017 - FDI Pitching and Catching Accelerated Training Weekend (12-14) John is a RHP prospect who worked hard on his skills during his time at the FDI Pitching and Catching Accelerated Training Weekend. On the mound, John has a clean, quick arm action and works to keep all of his pitches in the zone. He shows a three pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 59mph. Braking ball sits from 50-51mph with 10-4 break. Changeup ranges from 50-51mph. John can improve as a pitcher by separating his hands later in his motion and by releasing the ball later. With five more years to develop, John has the potential to further progress his skills on the mound.

07/17/2017 - Interactive Video Program - Rindge, NH Johnathan is a SS/RHP who will graduate in 2022. Defensively at SS, he attacks the GB with active footwork. He works hard by hustling on every play and tries to play through the ball towards his target. On the mound, this RHP has a 3-pitch mix and keeps his eyes locked in on the mitt. He delivers from a hi 3/4 arm slot with clean arm action and finishes in line towards home plate. With the stick, Johnathan displays a balanced/square setup. He swings on-plane through the zone and sprays pitches to all parts of the field. Overall abilities in his game will improve with work on the following.

Defense
1. Lateral quickness
2. Develop soft hands
3. Quick exchange to throw
Pitching
1. Be a strike thrower
2. Strong frontside
3. Arm strength (long toss)
Offense

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
