Official Scouting Report

05/26/2019 - National Tryout Plus - Keizer (Salem), OR Johnny continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and has a promising future on the diamond. He did show on the mound for the first time at the event. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. At 1B, defensive abilities have improved as he displays smooth / fluid actions. Feet are active as he shows proper footwork around the bag. Glove action is clean but needs to present more out front. Range will increase as he continues to improve foot quickness. At the plate, power potential has improved through a squared setup. Hands are quick (81 mph exit velocity) and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. He has strength in his swing with the baseball jumping off the bat when centered. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 63-70 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with late break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with arm side run. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program.

01/12/2018 - Baseball Factory Spring Training in Arizona (Ages 12-14) Johnny continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. In the OF, defensive abilities have improved as he displays smooth actions. Feet are aggressive as he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He works to get behind balls but needs to play through with momentum to his target. Range will increase as he reads balls off the bat better and continues to improve foot quickness. Throws are accurate but needs to build more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, he shows a squared setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields with gap-to-gap pop. At the event he was 2 for 4 with 2 BB. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

11/05/2017 - Interactive Video Program - Hillsboro, OR Johnny is a tall, athletic OF/1B. Defensively in the OF, he hustles hard laterally as he tracks down hard-hit fly balls. He secures the catch, sets his feet and makes aggressive throws to his target. At 1B, he makes for an easy target with his tall frame. He fields the GB well with his backhand and makes on-line throws to his target. As a hitter, Johnny shows a square setup and gets back into a good load. He swings on a direct path through the zone and sprays pitches to all parts of the field. Overall abilities in his game will improve with work on the following.

Outfield
1. Lateral quickness
2. Work behind the fly ball
3. Clean exchange to throw
Infield
1. Quick footwork
2. Develop soft hands
3. Arm strength (long toss)
Offense
1. Develop rhythm
2. Lower 1/2 drive
3. Improve bat speed

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
