Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 1B/LHPPosition Projection

12/27/2020 - Baseball Factory Recruiting Classic Johnny is an athletic 1B/LHP in the 2022 class that brings good energy to the field. At 1B, he starts with active prep and quick footwork, and is aggressive to come and get the GB. He showed good agility with a + 1st step while fielding the ball on-time in a square/athletic position. He creates momentum into his throws as he releases the ball quickly. At the plate, he starts in a tall/open stance with comfortable hands. He was aggressive early in counts using an on-plane swing path with quick hands. From the mound, this lefty showed a three-pitch mix from a low 3/4 arm angle. FB shows slight movement as he works it in and out. CB has 2/8 shape with good spin and CH was kept down in the zone (62 mph). He showed good tempo while repeating well. Overall, Johnny is a hard worker who has upside and should find success in this his junior season.

10/17/2020 - Fall Pro Training Experience - Nor Cal (HS) Johnny is a 1B/LHP prospect who continues to showcase his skills on the field. At 1B, Johnny shows active footwork with a quick first step. His exchange is smooth and he gets rid of the ball quickly, keeping his throws accurate to his target. Getting into a lower fielding position can help Johnny field ground balls more efficiently. At the plate, this LHH sets up in an open stance and takes a square stride. He gets his hands activated in his load and sprays the ball to all fields. Johnny can produce more pop off the barrel by driving his lower half more. On the mound, Johnny shows a three pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 70mph with tailing action. Breaking ball sits from 53-56mph with 3-9 break. Changeup sits from 57-59mph with arm side run. Being more controlled gathering to his balance point can help Johnny work through a smoother delivery. Overall, Johnny is a developing prospect who has the potential to further progress his skills on the field.

07/20/2020 - National Evaluation and Tryout - Stockton (Sacramento), CA Johnny is a LHH 1B who continues to work hard on his skills. Defensively, he has active prep with good lateral range making the tough plays to his glove-side and backhand. He has good bag awareness with quick footwork and can adjust to throws up and down the line. As a hitter, this lefty shows an open stance with rhythm to load. He takes a hack and looks to drive the ball on a line back up the middle of the field. Even more power is there with increased drive from his lower 1/2. Johnny has skills with still time (2022 grad) to progress to get to where he wants to be.

07/09/2019 - California Select Training & Competition - Session 2 (Ages 14-18) Johnny is a coachable LHP/1B prospect who worked hard on his skills during the California Select Training & Competition. On the mound, Johnny gathers over the rubber and separates his hands on time. He works with a loose arm and stays inline towards the plate, finishes square to his target. Johnny shows a two pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 66mph. Breaking ball sits from 54-55mph. Long tossing to build up his arm strength can help Johnny improve as a pitcher. In the field, Johnny starts on the balls of his feet and fields the ball out in front of his body. He gains momentum well on his throws and works to keep them accurate to his target. Johnny can improve defensively by getting into a more athletic fielding position. At the plate, this LHH sets up in an athletic stance with his hands held high. He gets into a small load and takes a level swing, leading to solid contact. Getting his front foot down sooner can help Johnny improve as a hitter. With three more years to develop, Johnny has the time and potential to further progress his skills on the field.

04/28/2019 - National Tryout Plus - Fairfield (Sacramento), CA Johnny showed nice overall improvements in his game during his last workout with The Factory. He increased radar velocity (69 MPH), lowered 60 time (8.82), and also showed a spike in hitting numbers. On the mound, Johnny has good balance, he separates on time, and gets good pivot off his back foot. He has good glove side lead, a complete finish toward his target, and he throws strikes. At 1B, Johnny has a good 1st step to the ball, he fields aggressively, and centers well. He fields in a square position, his exchange is clean, and he throws with momentum from a loose arm action to his target. At the plate, Johnny has a still head, a solid set-up, and a good bat angle. He makes level/consistent contact, tries to use the middle of the field, and taps into some lower body.

11/09/2017 - Baseball Factory Select Training & Competition in Arizona (Ages 12-14) Johnny continues to show steady progress in his baseball abilities. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 53-56 mph. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with solid sinking action. He shows a solid feel for pitching and attacks hitters, throwing strikes with all his pitches. Getting on a long toss program to develop more arm strength will aid in improving abilities on the mound. At 1B, he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Hands are clean but needs to present more out front. Feet are aggressive as he attacks balls and plays through with his body. Range will increase as he continues to improve foot quickness. At the plate he shows a squared setup. Hands are loose and work through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will increase as he keeps two hands on the bat through the point of contact.

09/03/2017 - Interactive Video Program - San Francisco, CA Johnny is a 1B/LHP who will graduate in 2023. Defensively at 1B, he takes active cuts/angles as he gets into a square fielding position. He hustles on every play and makes accurate throws to his target. On the mound, this lefty gathers over the rubber with a 2-pitch mix. He keeps his eyes on target and delivers from a 3/4 arm slot with clean arm action. With the bat, Johnny gets back into a good load. He swings on-plane through the zone and creates consistent contact with each pitch. Overall abilities in his game will improve with work on the following.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
