Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 3B/RHPPosition Projection

03/25/2018 - National Tryout Plus - Harmony (Pittsburgh), PA Jon is an athletic and talented 2020 3B/RHP prospect. At the hot corner, Jon has an efficient first step to the ball and plays through the back hand. He creates angles to the ball and throws from multiple arm angles. At the plate, Jon starts in an athletic stance, loads his hands back into the drive position, and keeps a quiet head. He hits off a firm front side and stays balanced through contact. On the bump, Jon gathers over the rubber, separates on time, and rotates toward his target. He works downhill and creates late run on his fastball. Jon will continue to improve with experience and we hope to see his progress in the future.

10/29/2017 - National Tryout Plus - Pittsburgh, PA Jon projects nicely as a dual position player at the next level. He continues to his show improvements both on the mound and at 3B. On the hill, Jon has a good arm action, he works on a downhill plane, and gets good extension on his pitches. He commands the zone with his pitches and his off-speed compliment his 83 MPH FB well. Defensively, Jon has active feet, has soft hands, and fields in a low/athletic position. He works around the ball well, has a quick exchange, and throws with accuracy and consistency to his target. Offensively, Jon stands in well balanced, he swings in good rhythm, and has good feel for the barrel. He is short to the ball and makes hard/consistent contact.

03/26/2017 - College PREP - Harmony (Pittsburgh), PA Jon continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. At 3B, defensive abilities have improved as he displays smooth clean actions. Feet are active as he works to square balls up but will benefit by playing through more with his body. Hands are soft / clean as he presents well out front. Range will increase as he improves foot quickness. At the plate, he shows an open / balanced setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach with power showing best to the pull side. On the mound, delivery is sound / repeatable allowing his arm action to work free to the plate. He shows good tempo through a strong balance point. Arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 77 mph. Fastball showed a range of 71-72 mph with cutting action. Breaking ball displays 12/6 shape with early, gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with sinking action and keeps the ball down. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program.

07/24/2016 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 1 Jon continues to show progress in his baseball abilities with a promising future on the diamond. At 3B, feet are active / aggressive as he attacks balls and plays through a low approach while presenting glove well out front. Hands / feet work well together through the fielding process. He shows off his athletic abilities on his feeds of the double play. Defensive grade will continue to improve as he increases foot quickness. At the plate he shows best through an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through an uphill swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing the whole field. Power will increase as he works to utilize his lower half more aggressively and adds overall body strength. At the event, he was 2 for 7 with a 2B and HR. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 68-72 mph with sinking action. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with sinking action. Getting on a long toss program to build more arm strength will aid in further development on mound. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and plays the game hard. Overall, Jon has a lot of potential with time and room to continue to progress his game.

04/03/2016 - Interactive Video Program - Pittsburgh, PA Jon is a tall/projectable 2-way player (3B/RHP) who is very talented. With the bat, this RHH shows an athletic/balanced setup with a solid base. He swings on a level path, engages his lower 1/2 and creates good extension through the zone. At 3B- Jon has active footwork and takes good angles around the GB. He makes the backhand play smoothly and fires accurate throws across the diamond. On the mound, Jon throws a 3-pitch mix (FB, CB, CH) from an over the top arm slot. He has smooth separation, maintains good arm speed on all pitches and throws strikes. FB ranges from 71-73 mph while showing slight run. Breaking ball has 12/6 shape with good action. Changeup is thrown with FB arm speed - helping to create deception. Overall abilities in his game will improve with work on the following.

Offense
1. Rhythm/Timing
2. Contact points
Defense
1. Play through the ball
2. Transfer/exchange
3. Arm strength (long toss)

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
