Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 1B/RHPPosition Projection

07/20/2014 - California Select Training & Competition Jonavich showed nice pop in his bat and quick hands during his workout in California. He is a powerful hitter with an activated load and good bat speed. Jonavich squares up well to the ball, he has good barrel accuracy, and shows good hand-eye coordination. At 1st base, Jonavich fields the ball agressively, his hands are sure, and he throws with a short arm action to his target. On the mound, Jonavich keeps his eyes on target, competes in the zone with his pitches, and he keeps the ball down in the zone.

06/16/2014 - College PREP - Houston, TX In Garcia's most recent outing with Baseball Factory, he showed his consistency on both sides of the ball. At 1B, he was aggressive to come get the ball and fielded with a good glove angle. Presenting the glove further in front and bending more at the knees will increase his effectiveness fielding ground balls. Offensively, he got the bat in a good position to hit and drove through with the bottom hand. Loosening his grip and driving through with the top hand will increase line-drive frequency. On the mound, he throws two pitches with some repeatability within the delivery. He topped out at 70 MPH with his FB and spun an 11/5 CB from 56-60. Overall - Garcia is a young player with time to increase strength and repeatability with his fundamentals.

02/02/2014 - College PREP - Houston, TX Garcia continues to show as a 1B/RHP but currently projects best in the 1B for the next level where he has improved his abilities. Defensive grades have improved as he shows clean / smooth actions. He displays proper footwork around the ball and is a quality receiver, showing clean hands. Defensive grade will continue to improve as he increases foot quickness. Arm strength has improved but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, hitting / power grades have really improved through an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work to and through a level swing path, creating extension. He shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered, mainly to the pull side. Hitting grades will continue to improve as he works to keep hands inside the all to utilize all fields. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to load more and transfer weight properly through his lower half. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 64-66 mph. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength and works to through more strikes.

07/26/2013 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City While in Pirate City Jonavich showed solid arm strength/accuracy and made some good adjustments to his fielding. Improvement can be made with his footwork, more specifically lateral quickness and the basic footwork around the bag. On the mound, Jonavich has a good balance point, rhythm, separation and he throws strikes. He can improve by lengthening the stride, using the lower half and loosening arm action. At the plate, Jonavich showed very good power but he needs to keep his front side closed longer and let the ball travel into the proper hitting zone.

07/31/2012 - Baseball Factory Select Training at Vero Beach (ages 12-14) Jonavich is a 1B/RHP that has potential but needs to work on his conditioning. In the field Jonavich has sure hands and an accurate arm with above average arm strength, but his footwork tends to be a little slow an choppy. As a pitcher Jonavich has sound arm mechanics with a loose front arm action. He does get his weight a little back at his balance point but has a smooth rhythm and good separation. Jonavich does have a tendency to open his front hip early which causes him to fall off to the 1B side of the mound. At the plate Jonavich has an athletic and balanced set-up with a short, square stride. He gets through the ball well with a level path but not letting the ball travel consistently leads to inconsistent contact. Overall Jonavich has a great attitude, and is very coachable. He has a lot of potential in the field, on the mound and at the plate, especially if he continues to work on his footwork and conditioning.

06/19/2012 - Interactive Video Program - Houston, TX Jonavich is a young, 2-way player with a thick frame. At 1st base, Jonavich has firm hands, playable feet, and he moves well for his size. He makes plays, his exchange is clean, and he throws with a short / loose arm with average strength to his target. On the mound, Jonavich has a sound / easy arm action, he works to his balance point well, and he has on-time separation. He works in good rhythm, keeps his shoulders level, and he lands in a square position. Offensively, Jonavich has a tall set-up, a short / square stride, and he makes consistent contact. He has a level swing plane, he makes consistent contact, and he gets good extension through the ball.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
