12/06/2015 - National Tryout - McCook (Chicago), IL Balfanz gained 5 mph on his raw velocity since we last saw him, up from 70 to 75 mph. At the plate, he got his hands into a good position following his pre-pitch action, and got the barrel to contact on a direct route. His move through the zone was on a level path, and he got some extension through out front when he rotated his core. Needs to avoid tendency to anchor his back leg, must get forward to allow for ideal move through the zone. Defensively, he setup well and showed solid hands to play the ball. His exchange was clean and he did a good job of getting rid of the ball. He can play lower and with his hands more out front, and has room to shorten up his actions on double play feeds and turns. Overall, a solid player that has made some progress with his tools and skills.

06/14/2014 - Omaha National World Series - Session 1 Joseph showed his consistent playing ability on both sides of the ball in his most recent outing with Baseball Factory. Offensively, puts the ball in play, making good contact. He showed the good baseball IQ to sac bunt, and was able to execute nicely to advance runners. Using his lower half and staying loose with his upper half will increase bat speed and pop. Defensively, he works to get into a good fielding position and knows where to be on plays. He anticipates well and makes most plays. Speeding up his feet and increasing his core strength will increase strength in his baseball actions. In all - Joe is a nice kid that works to improve time in and time out.

12/01/2013 - National Tryout - McCook (Chicago), IL Balfanz continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now an above average runner at 7.23. He utilizes his quick feet well as he moves well laterally, displaying range in the MIF. He works to square balls up showing clean hands but needs to play through balls more while presenting hands more out front to continue to improve defensive grade. Throws are accurate but needs to build more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, hitting and power grades have improved as well through squared setup. Hands work through a level path and he has strength in his swing with baseball jumping off the bat when centered, mainly to the pull side. For hitting grades to continue to improve, he needs to work to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields.

07/12/2013 - Cape Cod Select Training & Competition - Session 1 Joseph is a hard working SS who plays the game hard. At SS, Joseph has a good set-up, he works around the ball well, and he makes the routine plays. He has improved footwork, his exchange is clean, and he has accuracy to his target. Offensively, Joseph has a basic / simple approach, a direct barrel to the ball, and he shows good strike zone awareness.

06/02/2013 - College PREP - River Forest (Chicago), IL Joseph and a young SS who has a strong lower 1/2. In the INF, he works around the the ground ball and into a square fielding position. He makes the plays and has a clean exchange, making accurate throws across the diamond. Improving his approach and increasing his arm strength will both help to improve his defensive play. At the plate, Balfanz displays a square setup, solid load, and good balance. He tracks the ball into the zone and is pull-type hitter. Utilizing his lower 1/2 more will help to increase his power at the plate. As a 2016 grad, Joseph still has a lot of time to develop in his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
