01/18/2019 - 2019 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Joseph continues to show well on the diamond and did so again during his time at the Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament. He excels at the plate as he steps into the box with a purpose. Setup is tall and athletic with a solid base. Hands are very quick generating a ton of bat speed as the ball explodes off of his barrel to all parts of the park. He also has a ton of speed and can get his 6'3"/200lb frame scooting around the base paths. At 1B, he shows his athleticism with active footwork and his ability to move and get the groundballs to his right and left. Hands are soft as he funnels/gathers smoothly. On the mound, Scalzo works the zone, throws strikes and works to get ahead of hitters. FB now tops out at 82 mph, while his CB has 11/5 shape with good action. Joseph is a very talented and versatile prospect who has the tools that will translate well into the next level.

09/02/2018 - College PREP - San Francisco, CA Joseph continues to show as a prospect on the diamond. At the plate is where he continues to show best through a tall setup. Hands are quick (90 mph exit velocity) and work through an aggressive swing path. He utilizes his lower half well and has strength in his with the baseball exploding off the bat when centered. At 1B, he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Glove action is soft / sure and presents well out front. Feet are aggressive as he attacks balls through a low approach. Range is a plus as he moves well laterally and covers a lot of ground. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 78-79 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with late / sharp break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with arm side run. Off speed stuff show as well above average pitches that will get outs. Control is well above average as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Joseph will get looks from the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities.

06/10/2018 - College PREP - Monterey, CA Joseph is a talented 1B/RHP prospect who has a tall, long build. Offensively, Joseph has an athletic setup with a firm front side. He has fluid rhythm with a good load and square stride. Joseph shows fast bat speed with a direct swing path. He consistently lands the barrel to the baseball. Joseph shows the ability to drive the ball to each gap with power. In the field, Joseph plays with effective pre-pitch actions and quick footwork. He presents his glove and fields the ball in an athletic position. He has a quick exchange leading into a long arm action throwing from a 3/4 arm slot. He has a quick release showing consistently strong throws across the diamond. On the mound, Joseph has a balanced, on-time delivery throwing from a 3/4 arm slot. He has a clean arm action and extends through his release. Joseph stays square to home plate with a controlled landing. He does a nice job rotating with his hips and finishing towards his target. He commands his fastball with late tail movement. Joseph also locates his late breaking curveball and deceptive changeup. Overall, Joseph is a versatile prospect who has an above average skill set.

12/27/2017 - Under Armour Baseball Factory Recruiting Classic (Ages 14-18) Joseph has made huge strides in his game and is a bona fide prospect for the next level. His improvements have been widespread, but are most notable at the plate where he is always a home run threat with huge raw power and a compact swing. He crushes the ball to all fields as his quick, strong hands (96mph exit velo) work on a direct path to the ball. He has a strong lower half to create bat speed and power to hit the ball to the deepest parts of the park. At first, his smooth actions and proper footwork allow him to work around the bag with ease and pick throws from the dirt. He fields low with soft hands and makes all of the plays that come his way. Joseph is a very exciting prospect with tons of potential on the field.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "present" abilities (tools), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year, using the scale below. However, grades 10-18 are not available for use with High School players (ages 14-18), while grades 55-70 are not available for use with Pre High School players (ages 12-14). These instances are marked as "--- N/A ---" in the "Description" fields below.
