Official Scouting Report

  • OF/RHPPosition Projection

01/08/2021 - 2021 Baseball Factory Pre-Season Prospects Tournament (HS) Joshua is an OF/RHP prospect who showcased his skills during the Pre-Season Prospects Tournament. In the field, Joshua shows efficient footwork and gets into an athletic position. He fields the ball out in front of his body and has a clean exchange. He gets rid of the ball quickly and makes accurate throws to his target. At the plate, this RHH sets up in an athletic stance and takes a short stride. He works through a short swing and produces solid line drives. On the mound, Joshua shows a three pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 71mph. Breaking ball sits from 64-65mph with 10-4 break. Changeup sits from 62-63mph with tailing action. Overall, Joshua is a developing prospect who has the potential to further build upon his skills on the field.

11/12/2020 - Baseball Factory Fall Select Tournament at Pirate City Joshua continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and worked hard on his game at Pirate City. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. In the OF he displays smooth actions. He takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He works to get behind balls and plays through with momentum to his target. Range will increase as he improves foot quickness. At the plate, he shows a squared setup. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. At the event, he was 2 for 4 with a 2B and sac fly. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 69 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Getting on a long toss program to develop more arm strength and developing off speed pitches will aid in improving abilities on the mound. Garvin is coachable player who works hard and makes adjustments quickly. He plays the game with high energy and leaves it all on the field.

08/23/2020 - Back to Baseball Program Only - St Cloud (Minneapolis), MN Garvin continues to work hard on his game. In the OF, he takes a quick first step and is aggressive to track down fly-balls hit to his right and left. He secures the ball with 2-hands, gathers well and has a clean transfer to throw. At the plate, this righty gets loaded and waits for a pitch he likes. He looks to square the ball up and hit line-drives back up the middle of the field. More power potential is there with more drive from his lower 1/2. On the mound, he maintains a good pace and repeats he delivery well. FB shows slight cutting action as he works it in and out. Breaking ball has 9/3 shape - 56-58 mph. Joshua (2022 grad) still has time to progress his skill-set to get to where he wants to be.

11/08/2019 - Baseball Factory's Fall Classic Tournament at Pirate City Joshua continues to shine on the diamond. In the OF, he displays smooth actions. He takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He works to get behind balls but needs to play through more with momentum to his target. Range will increase as he improves foot quickness. At the plate, he shows a crouched setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He makes consistent contact with power showing best to the pull side. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 67 mph. Fastball showed a range of 62-64 mph with cutting action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude, works hard, and is very coachable.

08/04/2019 - College PREP - Council Bluffs (Omaha), IA Joshua is a lean OF/RHP who will graduate in 2022. In the OF, he utilizes his feet well in tracking down balls. He needs to work to take better angles to get behind balls to play through with momentum to his target. Glove action is clean and he presents out front well. At the plate, he shows a squared setup. Hands are loose and work through level swing path. He makes consistent contact through a line drive approach with power showing best to the pull side. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 64-66 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength and works to throw more strikes. With 3 years to further develop, Joshua has abilities with time and room to progress his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
