06/22/2012 - Omaha National World Series - Session 2 Joshua worked out behind the plate during his time in Omaha. He has a good set-up, presents his glove early, and his exchange is clean. He looks the ball into his glove and has accuracy on throws to 2nd base. Offensively, Joshua has an okay set-up, he stays through the ball well, and he uses his lower 1/2. He hits off a stiff front leg and puts the bat on the ball.

11/10/2011 - Pirate City Select Training - 2011 Joshua worked out both behind the plate and on the mound during his time in Pirate City. Defensively, Joshua has good footwork, some sway, and he looks the ball into his glove. He has a quick exchange, uses his body to throw, and delivers the ball with accuracy to his target. On the mound, Joshua has a simple delivery, good balance, and he gets out over his front knee. He has some A/S run on his FB, and his CB shows decent break. Offensively, Joshua has a short / level swing, and good separation. He puts the bat on the ball and gets decent extension through.

01/14/2011 - Arizona National Spring Training - 2011 Mallett continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date but will benefit by staying on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness. He threw his best pop time to date at 2.90 as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Throws are accurate but must stay on a long toss program to aid in developing more carry. Offensively, hitting grades improved as he displays good mechanics. He gets to a good launch position with hands working inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Power numbers will continue to increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently through the swing. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 53-56 mph. Currently, he projects best as a catcher for the next level. Joshua's best tool may be his mental makeup as he is very coachable and is very eager to learn.

08/04/2010 - College Prep Super Regional - Spokane Valley, WA - PM Joshua is a young (2015) two-way player as a catcher plus on the mound with a small young body that shows projection as he continues to physically mature. Feet are active as he gains ground, in line with his target, showing an efficient transfer / exchange. Pop times show a range of 2.94-3.16 as he must get on a long toss program to develop more carry on throws, lowering pop times. Receiving and blocking skills need further development behind the plate but he works hard. Offensively, mallet loads well and shows a level swing path but has some mechanical flaws that are hindering him from reaching his full potential with grades improving with instruction and adjustments. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 52-54 mph. Breaking ball is below average, needing further development to be a quality pitch at the next level. Changeup is best off speed pitch, showing a solid feel for with sinking action. With 5 years to further develop, Joshua has abilities with time and room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
