Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • Position Projection

07/07/2020 - 2020 Baseball Factory's National West Showcase Josh is one of the top 2-way prospects in the 2021 class pulling off the difficult combination of high-level C and RHP. Behind the plate his physical frame moves well and is flexible while having the strength to handle the rigors of the catching position. He receives with sure, strong hands and shows his big arm strength with online carry on his throws to 2B that were as low as 1.89. Josh also swings the bat with authority showing loft power to the pull side and recording an exit velocity of 92 mph. He jumped on the mound and pounded the strike zone with a fastball/curveball mix that resulted in 5 strikeouts out of the 8 batters he faced. His fastball was up to 93 mph with downhill plane and life through the zone, and he did it easily. There is a lot to like here as Josh has a high ceiling at both spots.

01/17/2020 - 2020 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Joshua is a strong, athletic C/RHP prospect who showed well at the Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament. Behind the plate, Joshua sits in an athletic stance and receives with a strong glove. He makes a clean exchange and gains ground well on his throws, keeping them accurate with carry through the 2B bag. He moves on time to block and centers the ball in the middle of his body. At the plate, this RHH sets up in an open stance and takes a square stride. He is controlled getting his hands activated in his load and drives through well with his lower half. He takes a smooth swing with plus bat speed, leading to great raw power. On the mound, Joshua gathers over the rubber and separates his hands on time. He works with a loose arm and accelerates through his release, finishing with his chest over his front knee. Joshua shows an advanced two pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 92mph with arm side run. Breaking ball sits from 74-77mph with sharp 11-5 break. Joshua performed well in his outing on the mound, striking out 10 of 15 total batters. Overall, Joshua is a talented prospect who will be one to follow going into his junior season.

01/18/2019 - 2019 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Joshua is an athletic C/RHP who has a promising future on the diamond. He utilizes his feet well in working in line to his target through a clean transfer / exchange as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Pop times show a range of 2.00-2.08 with on line (87 mph velocity) carry through his target. Receiving / blocking skills show as outstanding tools that will play well at the next level. He is flexible and displays a solid setup and utilizes his body well through the blocking process. At the plate, he continues to shine, displaying outstanding hitting / power potential through an athletic setup. He gets to a strong launch position and shows quick hands (84 mph exit velocity) that generate bat speed to and through contact, creating extension. Barrel accuracy is a plus with strength in his swing as the baseball explodes off the bat when centered, mainly to the pull side. On the mound, arm action is loose, free, and quick. Fastball shows a range of 79-85 mph on a downhill plane with tailing action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with sharp break. Control is outstanding as he works fast, attacking hitters and through strikes with all his pitches. Joshua has a ton of potential and is a sure player to follow, possibly as a two-way guy.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
