04/30/2017 - College PREP - Charlottesville, VA Josiah continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and has a promising future on the diamond. At the plate, he continues to show as a switch hitter and has improved his hitting / power potential from both sides. Hands are quick (85 mph exit velocity) and work through an aggressive swing path. He has strength in his swing and stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields with gap-to-gap pop. Power will continue to improve as he works to utilize his lower half more efficiently. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 7.21 runner. Behind the plate, pop times showed in the 2.19 range with accuracy on his throws. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Hands are soft / sure and he sticks balls in the zone. He shows off his athletic abilities through the blocking process and is a wall behind the plate.

10/01/2016 - Pitching & Catching Accelerated Training Weekend (Ages 14-18) Josiah continued to show his catching skills at the Accelerated Training Weekend. He showed his best pop time to date at 2.1 seconds. Josiah has quick feet behind the plate and has a quick exchange to throw. His release is quick and his throws show carry through his target. Josiah can improve as a catcher by letting the ball travel more and by receiving the ball more in the center of his chest. Overall, Josiah is a solid catcher who has the potential to further develop his skills.

05/15/2016 - College PREP - Glen Allen (Richmond), VA Joseph continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. He improved his pop times behind the dish as he threw his lowest time to date at 2.28. Hands / feet work well together through a quick / clean transfer exchange as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Receiving / blocking skills will continue to improve as he develops and get more reps. At the plate, he continues to show as a switch hitter but has really improved from the left side. Hands are quick and work inside the ball, utilizing all fields. He loads well, utilizes his lower half well, and shows a solid feel for the barrel.

01/15/2016 - Baseball Factory National Spring Training at Pirate City Josiah is a very coachable player who worked hard on his game during his time in Pirate City. Offensively, this switch hitter shows similarly from both sides of the plate. He has rhythm to load and waits for his pitch. Quick hands whip the barrel through a level path as he doesn't get cheated, connecting and driving the ball on a line. Behind the plate, he sits in well and tracks pitches into a soft mitt. He moves well laterally around pitches in the dirt and centers the ball off of his chest. Throws to 2B are accurate coming from a clean transfer/exchange - pop times of 2.34. Quickening his footwork and strengthening his arm (long toss) will help to lower pop times. Calkins is a strong/athletic player (2018 grad) who still has time to progress on the diamond.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
