Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/OFPosition Projection

01/13/2012 - 2012 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament Carlson continues to show as a two-way player in the OF plus on the mound. Currently, he projects best on the mound where he has improved his abilities. Arm strength has improved as he topped out at 85 mph. Fastball showed a range of 81-85 mph with arm side run on a downhill plane that creates tough angles on hitters. His breaking ball has improved to well above average as it displays sharp downward tilt. He shows solid feel for his change-up that has sinking action. He attacks hitters as he throws strikes with all his pitches, changing speeds well. In the OF, he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He plays through ground balls aggressively and gets rid of the baseball quickly. At the plate, Josiah shows a balanced approach with his hands working inside the ball through a level swing path. His hands are quick, flashing bat speed.

08/10/2011 - Pirate City World Series 2011 - Session 2 Carlson continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and showed for the first time in the OF. Currently, he projects best in the OF for the next level. Foot speed has improved as he is now an above average runner at 7.17. He utilizes his quick, athletic feet well in tracking down balls as he works to get behind and plays through with momentum to his target. Throws display life, accuracy, and on line carry as he gets rid of the ball quickly, now showing well above average arm strength. Offensively, hitting grades have improved to outstanding with well above average power through a solid, balanced approach. Hands are quick, generating plus bat speed through the baseball. Swing path gets long as he needs to work on keeping hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. He shows a feel for the barrel with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered. At the event, he was 3 for 9 with a 2B. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 78-83 mph with arm side run. Off speed pitches show potential as being quality pitches as he continues to improve. He attacks hitters throwing strikes with all of his pitches.

06/05/2011 - College PREP - River Forest (Chicago), IL Josiah is a tall and lanky pitcher that will graduate in 2012. He shows a repeatable delivery, is well balanced throughout the delivery and has good rhythm and tempo. He throws from a high 3/4 arm slot and is consistent with his arm action. He throws his fastball in the 81-83 mph range with hard sinking action and good command. He throws his curve ball from the same arm slot as his fastball with 10 to 4 break, more of a sweeping action. He may want to consider throwing a slider with more speed on this pitch. He also has the makings of a decent change up but throws it between 72-76 mph which is too hard compared to the fastball. A solid long toss program and getting better extension on his pitches should improve his skills on the mound and help prepare him for the next level.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
