01/15/2010 - Under Armour Preseason All-America - 2010
Cortez showed as a two-way player at 3B plus now on the mound. Currently, he projects best at 3B for the next level. Power numbers at the plate have improved as the baseball explodes off his bat when centered through a level swing. He loads well and transfers weight properly through the swing. Defensively, he shows a low to high approach, making the plays. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 76-81 mph with average off speed pitches.

Julian is a young 3B with strong looking body that has room to further develop. He shows a ton of athletic actions in his body and moves well for a big guy. Foot speed is near average and he does need to get on a speed / agility program to aid in improving foot quickness for the next level. Feet are active and aggressive in coming to get the baseball in the infield. He plays low to high, working through the baseball with his feet and hands. Glove actions are soft, sure, and clean in making all the plays. Defensive abilities are well above average. Arm strength is well above average displaying life, carry, and accuracy across the diamond. He can make all the throws from the corner position. A strict long toss program will aid in further developing more arm strength. At the plate, Cortez has near above average ability with solid average power. He sits in well and is aggressive through his lower half. Hands are quick, working inside the baseball, utilizing all fields. He shows a feel for the barrel, keeping hands through the baseball at contact. With 2 years to further develop, Julian has the makings to be a solid player at the collegiate level and will get a ton of looks from the collegiate coaches.
