Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • OF/SSPosition Projection

10/05/2014 - College PREP - Trenton, NJ Justin is a hardworking, coachable 2016 grad that showed improvement on his H-1B time (4.21). Defensively, at SS, he has quick feet with good body control. He works to get around the ball and uses his soft hands and clean exchange to give on-line throws to his target. In the OF, he uses his lower 1/2 to gain momentum to and through his target with plus carry on his ball. Developing arm strength with the help from a long toss program and fielding the ball out in front/playing through will improve Justin's defensive abilities. At the plate, he showed improvement by engaging his lower 1/2 to drive the ball. Refining his timing and getting more extension will improve his hitting abilities. With Justin's continued improvement, this 2016 grad will see success in his upcoming season.

11/07/2013 - Baseball Factory Select Training & Competition at Pirate City Hernandez showed at SS at the event and has improved some of his baseball abilities. At the plate is where he has improved the most through a squared / athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields as he makes consistent contact through a solid line drive approach. Barrel accuracy is a plus with the baseball jumping off the bat when centered. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. At the event, he was 2 for 6 with a 2B and 3B. At SS, feet are active / quick as he works on squaring balls up and makes the routine plays. He moves well laterally, displaying range in the MIF. For defensive grade to continue to improve, he needs to attack ground balls and play through while presenting hands more out front. Throws are accurate, but needs to build more arm strength and work to get rid of the ball quicker to improve arm grade. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and plays the game hard, showing a desire to be the best player he can be.

07/15/2013 - College PREP - Trenton, NJ Justin is a lean SS that will graduate in 2016. Foot speed is above average as indicated by his 7.20 60 time. He displays proper footwork through the fielding process, displaying clean hands. He is aggressive and works to get rid of the baseball quickly. For defensive grade to continue to improve, he needs to attack ground balls more while presenting hands well out front and improve foot quickness. Throws are accurate but needs to build more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, Hernandez shows an athletic setup with balance. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields. For hitting grades to continue to improve, he needs to get stride foot down sooner to work on time. Power numbers will continue to increase as he learns to use his lower half more and overall body strength. With 3 years to further develop, Justin has abilities with time and room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "present" abilities (tools), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year, using the scale below. However, grades 10-18 are not available for use with High School players (ages 14-18), while grades 55-70 are not available for use with Pre High School players (ages 12-14). These instances are marked as "--- N/A ---" in the "Description" fields below.
