Official Scouting Report

  • RHP/1BPosition Projection

05/20/2018 - National Tryout Plus - Henrico (Richmond), VA Justin continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and he has a big upside on the mound. On the bump, delivery is sound / repeatable allowing his loose, quick arm action to work well to the plate. Arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 84 mph. Fastball showed range of 83-84 mph with tailing action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with late break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with sinking action. Off speed stuff show as quality pitches at the next level. Control is well above average as he attacks hitters and throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. At 1B, defensive abilities are now outstanding as he displays smooth / clean actions. Feet are active and he displays proper footwork around the bag. Glove action is clean and presents well out front. He shows off his athletic abilities on his feeds of the double play and recovers well. At the plate, he shows a squared setup. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive swing path. He makes consistent contact through a line drive approach with power showing best to the pull side. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently.

08/02/2017 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 (Ages 14-18) Justin showed improvements on the mound, especially in the area of control. He mixed all of his pitches well, competed in the zone, and showed the ability to field his position well. Justin works on a downhill plane, repeats his delivery, and stays balanced throughout his delivery. At 3B, Justin made plays on balls hit his way, he fields in a square position, and throws with carry and consistency across the diamond. At the plate, Justin has an open stance, proper load, and decent bat speed. He can spray to all fields while making consistent contact.

05/21/2017 - College PREP - Glen Allen (Richmond), VA Justin is a tall, lanky RHP who will graduate in 2019. Delivery is sound / repeatable allowing his arm action to work free to the plate. He shows good tempo through a strong balance point and throws from a high 3/4 arm slot. Fastball showed a range of 75-78 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with sinking action. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. With 2 years to further develop, Justin has abilities with time and room to progress his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
