09/04/2020 - MS All-Region Tournament Payne continues to work hard on his skills and did so again at the All-Region Tournament. Offensively is where he excels. He steps into the box with a purpose looking to do damage. He maintains centered balance and has patience waiting for a pitch he likes. Swing is on-plane as he connects and drives the ball from gap-to-gap (exit velocity = 80 mph). At SS, he hustles around the GB and into a square fielding position. He tracks the ball into his mitt and gathers well. Continuing to develop his footwork/agility will help to increase lateral range. On the mound, Justin works tall, has smooth separation and stays directional toward the plate. He gets good glove-side lead and finishes complete. FB tops out at 69 mph as he works it in and out. Breaking ball shows 10/4 shape with good depth - 59-60 mph. Only a 2024 grad - Justin has a solid skill-set with upside and time to progress to get to where he wants to be.

12/27/2019 - Baseball Factory Winter Classic (Ages 12-14) Justin is a coachable SS/RHP prospect who worked hard on his skills during the Winter Classic. In the field, Justin makes the routine plays and works to keep his throws accurate to his target. Getting into a lower fielding position can help Justin improve defensively. At the plate, this RHH sets up in a square stance with loose hands. He takes a level swing with fast bat speed, leading to solid contact. Justin can improve as a hitter by driving his lower half more. On the mound, Justin shows a three pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 64mph. Breaking ball sits at 52mph with 10-4 break. Changeup sits at 61mph with cutting action. Being more controlled gathering to his balance point can help Justin improve as a pitcher. With four more years to develop, Justin has the time and potential to further develop his skills on the field.

10/27/2019 - Accelerated Interactive Video Program - Joplin, MO Justin is a strong RHP/SS prospect who will graduate in 2024. On the mound, Justin shows a three pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 59mph. Breaking ball sits from 47-50mph with 12-6 break. Changeup sits from 56-58mph with sinking action as he throws with deceptive arm speed. In the field, Justin shows active footwork and makes the routine plays. At the plate, this RHH sets up in a square stance and takes a short stride. He shows smooth rhythm and center balance. He takes a direct swing with plus bat speed, leading to consistent contact and solid pop. Overall abilities can improve with work on the following.

Pitching
1. Looser arm
2. Extend through release
3. Longer stride
Fielding
1. Lateral range
2. More athletic fielding position
3. Present hands out in front
Hitting
1. More load
2. Lower half drive
3. Let pitches travel

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
