01/15/2021 - 2021 Baseball Factory Pre-Season All-America Tournament (FL) Richards continues to show well and did so again at the Pre-Season All-America Tournament. Offensively is where he excels. He stands in the box athletically with centered balance and a solid base. He tracks pitches into the zone, fires the barrel with quick hands and engages his strong lower 1/2, generating pop off of the barrel. Behind the dish, Justin sits in well with quiet/simple actions tracking pitches into a soft mitt. He takes good angles laterally, gaining and centering the ball in front. Transfer is clean with accuracy to 2B - posting his best pop time to date (in game) 2.13. Justin has the tools that will provide success in this only his junior season.

09/04/2020 - HS All-Region Tournament Justin continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Behind the dish, he presents a soft/sure mitt showing great pocket awareness sticking pitches. He utilizes his body well through the blocking process, centering balls well out front. Pop times have improved as he threw his lowest time to date at 2.20 with accuracy on his throws. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength. At the plate, he shows a squared setup. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach.

02/22/2020 - Baseball Factory Mid-Atlantic Pitching/Catching Training - Columbia, MD (Ages 14-18) Justin showed lots of improvement since we last saw him. Behind the plate, he showed good lateral movement, strong yet relaxed hands in receiving, all from a quiet and athletic stance. At the plate, he shows excellent bat speed with great rhythm. In addition, he shows the ability to use the entire field with a smooth overall swing. Richards is a talented player that continues to get better and better. It will be fun to watch him advance.

12/29/2019 - College PREP - Swarthmore (Philadelphia), PA Justin continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and has a promising future on the diamond. Behind the plate, pop times have improved as he threw his lowest time to date at 2.25. He gets rid of the baseball through a quick transfer/exchange with accuracy on his throws. Hands are soft/sure and he sticks balls in the zone. He utilizes his body well through the blocking process but needs to work to get down sooner. In the OF, he takes proper routes/angles in tracking down balls. He works to get behind balls but needs to play through more with momentum to his target. Range will increase as he improves foot quickness. At the plate, hitting/power potential are now outstanding through an open setup. Hands are quick (84 mph exit velocity) and work to and through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields and has strength in his swing with gap-to-gap pop.

06/22/2019 - Omaha National World Series - Session 2 (Ages 14-18) Justin continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and has a bright future on the diamond. Behind the plate, pop times have improved as he threw his lowest time to date at 2.43. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Hands are soft/sure and he sticks balls in the zone. He utilizes his body well through the blocking process, centering balls well out front. At the plate, he continues to shine through a squared setup. Hands are quick (84 mph exit velocity) and work to and through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields with gap-to-gap pop. Mental makeup is a plus as he is a team player, coachable, and plays the game hard.

07/18/2017 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 1 (Ages 12-14) Justin is an athletic built C/OF who will graduate in 2022. He showed an advanced approach at the plate showing the ability to drive balls to the gaps. He starts from a simple, square setup and then proceeds to explode his lower half which allows him to drive the baseball. His hands stay in the zone for a long time allowing him to cover the strike zone. Justin displayed power to left field. In the OF, he attacked balls aggressively and showed range to get to balls in the gaps. Increasing arm strength will help Justin in the OF. Behind the plate, Justin blocks balls in the dirt and keeps them in front, while also showing sure hands receiving pitches. He showed a short exchange on his throws to bases. With continued reps and added strength, Justin is a talented player to watch who displays great work habits on the field.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
