Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/1BPosition Projection

10/10/2012 - Arizona Senior Fall Classic Justin continues to show as RHP/1B but currently projects best on the mound for the next level where is has a big upside. Delivery is sound / repeatable, displaying proper mechanics that allows his arm action to work loose and quickly to the plate. Fastball showed a range of 81-86 mph with late arm side run. Changeup is a quality pitch that will get outs at the next level as he shows a solid feel for with late fading action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with tight bite and late depth. Command / control are a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches, locating to both sides of the plate and changes speeds well. At 1B, he shows proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver, displaying clean hands. At the plate, he shows a balanced setup with rhythm. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He has leverage in his swing with the baseball jumping off of his bat when centered, mainly to the pull side. For hitting grades to continue to improve, he needs to work to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. At the event, he was 3 for 8 with a 2B.

07/23/2012 - 2012 Team One Northeast Showcase Justin is a tall and athletic right-handed pitcher with some run on his fastball. On the mound, he has a compact delivery with strong direction that allows him to maintain a quiet head throughout his delivery. His abilities on the mound should continue to develop as he gains a better feel for maintaining a strong front side as he makes his move to the plate. As a 2013 graduate, Justin has the opportunity to continue to develop his skills in preparation for the next level.

07/17/2012 - College PREP - Trenton, NJ Justin is a tall, athletic RHP/1B with a frame well suited for the mound and will graduate in 2013. Currently, he projects best on the mound for the next level. Arm strength is outstanding as indicated by his top velocity of 86 mph. Fastball shows a range of 85-86 mph with arm side run. Off speed pitches are outstanding, showing as quality pitches that will get outs at the next level. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with late break. Changeup shows a solid feel for with arm side run as he maintains arm speed. Command / control are outstanding as he throws strikes with all his pitches, locating to both sides of the plate. At 1B, feet are active as he moves well laterally and displays proper footwork around the bag. Hands are clean but needs to present more, improve foot speed, and play through balls more to continue to improve defensive grade. At the plate, Valdespina continues to shine showing outstanding hitting abilities and power. Hands are quick, generating plus bat speed through a short / direct / level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel with the baseball exploding off his bat when centered. Justin has an upside on the mound and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches, possibly as a two-way guy.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
