Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/3BPosition Projection

02/01/2015 - College PREP - Houston, TX Justin is a 6'/205 lbs RHP/3B that showed solid actions once again at his most recent outing with Baseball Factory. Defensively at 3B, he made plays with efficient feet and good body control. He worked his glove out in front and was sure to field. He had a clean arm stroke to throw to first and displayed present carry. Offensively, he hit with gap pop, getting good extension out in front. He was direct with his path and rotated his core to help boost pop. On the mound, he showed good feel and repeatability to deliver his three pitches. His CB showed to be exceptional with 11/5 shape and sharp action from 68-71. His presence on the mound was very strong, with his plus frame and life down in the zone. In all - Justin is a projectable player that we have had the pleasure of tracking and look forward to continuing to track throughout his final two seasons.

12/07/2014 - College PREP - Grand Prairie (DFW), TX Justin is a 2016 RHP/3B with a very solid frame. Offensively, he was direct with his hands down to contact, accelerating the barrel through the zone with good barrel accuracy. He displayed pull side pop and was very composed and controlled in the box. Loosening his grip, and becoming consistently compact with his barrel delivery will boost hard hit frequency. At 3B, he makes plays with efficient footwork and boddy control. His glove showed to be soft and he threw with momentum and a clean arm stroke. Cleaning up his exchange and finding a game speed pace are essential for his ability to play over at the hot corner. On the hill, he threw his FB, 12/6 CB, and CH with a good tempo and loose/free arm action. He rotates to finish, but can add greater consistency with his release points and finish with off-speed. All in all - Waltmon has another two seasons to grow and develop for the next level.

07/29/2014 - Under Armour Southwest Championships, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One Waltmon continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Defensive grade has improved, now displaying outstanding abilities as he shows smooth/athletic actions. He moves well laterally to both sides. Hands/feet work well together and he shows big play potential. He gets rid of the baseball quickly with accuracy, life, and on line carry on his throws. At the plate he has improved his power grade now showing tremendous power potential through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, generating plus bat speed through a simple swing path. He is strong with strength and leverage in his swing with baseball exploding off the bat when centered. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 78-82 mph with cutting action. Off speed stuff show as quality pitches that will get outs at the next level. Command/control is outstanding as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he is a great kid and fierce competitor on the mound as he plays hard.

06/14/2014 - Omaha National World Series - Session 1 Justin continues to show as a RHP/3B with the makings of a special type 2 way player. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date, topping out at 84 mph. Fastball works on a strong downhill plane with plus arm side run. Breaking ball and changeup show as tremendous pitches that will get outs at the next level. Command/control are superior as he throws strikes with all his pitches, locating to both sides of the plate and changes speeds well. He had 2 quality outings at the event. At the plate, he has really improved his hitting/power abilities through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, generating plus bat speed and he shows an outstanding feel for the barrel with baseball exploding off the bat when centered. He is a plus defender at 3B. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

12/27/2013 - Under Armour Baseball Factory Recruiting Classic Justin continues to work hard on his game. He is a quiet leader and leads by example. When he takes the mound, he's out there to battle. FB still sits in the upper 70's while showing arm-side run. His delivery is fluid as he works downhill off of the rubber. At the hot corner, he moves well to get into a square fielding position. Justin moves well laterally and fields the ball to his right and left. He has a quick release and fires the ball across the diamond. Offensively, he shows good rhythm with a solid base. He delivers the barrel on a level path and drives it on a line. Justin is a gamer who brings his all to the field.

07/31/2013 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 1 Justin is a solid RHP/3B that will graduate in 2016. Currently, he projects best at 3B for the next level but has upside on the mound. Foot speed is solid as indicated by his 7.38 60 time. He utilizes his quick / athletic feet well in attacking ground balls and plays through well with his body. Hands are soft, sure, and presents well out front as he makes all the plays. Throws are accurate with on line carry across the diamond as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. At the plate, he shows a balanced setup with rhythm. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. Barrel accuracy is a plus with baseball jumping off the bat when centered. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 76-79 mph. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with slight break as he needs to stay on top more. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with arm side run. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is gained. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a great attitude and plays hard. With 2 years to further develop, Justin has the makings to be a special type player and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities, possibly as a two-way player.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
