Official Scouting Report

12/28/2020 - Winter Pro Training Experience - TX (HS) JW continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. This 2023 grad put on one of his best performances to date. Projecting as an RHP, JW filled up the zone in his outing. With the fastball sitting at 71-73 mph, he would show some feel for pitch-ability. Where we were very impressed was with his secondary pitches. He showed fastball arm speed on his change-up and a good 10-4 breaking ball. JW also did a nice job offensively, battling and creating hard contact in 4 at-bats. His general square approach, on-time rhythm, and 72 mph exit velocity would set him up for success. Overall, JW is a solid prospect who has the potential to further develop his skills on the field.

09/20/2020 - Official College Recruiting Membership - Sugar Land (Houston), TX JW continues to shine on the diamond with improvements in his baseball abilities. Behind the dish, he shows a squared setup with a clean mitt but needs to present an earlier target. He utilizes his body well through the blocking process, but needs to work to get body down sooner. Pop times have improved as he threw his time to date at 2.50 with accuracy on his throws. At the plate, he shows an open setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 71 mph. Fastball showed a range of 70-71 mph. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with sinking action. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program.

02/16/2020 - College PREP - Missouri City (Houston), TX JW is a young C/RHP that will graduate in 2023. Behind the dish, JW works hard presenting a good glove and works hard to create a good target in his primary stance. As he works to throw, he makes a clean exchange getting rid of the ball with a short arm action. At the plate, JW sets up in a tall stance taking a short stride to start his swing. He works hard to get his lower half through and get the barrel on plane. Working on keeping his weight back and get more explosive will help JW at the plate. On the bump, JW shows a 3-pitch mix with a FB, CB, and CH. Pitching, he gathers over the rubber well separating his hands on time showing a clean arm action. He keeps good direction going down the mound and finishes rotation to the target. JW is young and will continue to improve and grow, we look forward to seeing his progress.

07/16/2019 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 1 (Ages 12-14) JW continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and has a promising future on the diamond. Behind the plate, feet are active as he works in line through a clean transfer / exchange as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Pop times showed in the 2.85 range with accuracy on his throws. Times will continue to drop as he continues to build more arm strength through a long toss program. He shows a squared setup and receives the ball well. He utilizes his body well through the blocking process, centering balls well out front. At the plate, hitting potential has improved through an open setup. Hands are quick and work through level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 68 mph. Fastball shows a range of 60-68 mph. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup but throws too hard, resembling fastball. He throws a slider that resembles breaking ball. Stock to the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength and works to throw more strikes. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude and good instincts with plays with a lot of energy.

03/17/2019 - National Tryout Plus - Tomball (Houston), TX JW showed improvements in his all around game during his last workout with The Factory. He raised velocity (63 MPH), catching numbers, and hitting grades. Pop times also lowered to 2.81 seconds. Behind the plate, JW has a presentable glove, he sits in squarely, and has soft hands. He receives well, keeps it in front when blocking, and has an accurate arm with carry to 2nd base. On the mound, JW has a loose/clean arm circle, good balance, and he uses his lower body. He gets solid extension on his pitches and competes in the zone. Offensively, hitting grades improved to 32's. He stands in the box well, swings in good rhythm, and can hit to all fields. JW makes square contact, swings on plane, and taps into some lower body.

07/06/2018 - Cape Cod Select Training & Competition (Ages 12-14) JW is a young, 2-way player who catches and pitches. Behind the plate, JW sits in well, he tracks into the glove, and his hands are soft. He has a clean release, and a short/accurate arm to 2nd base. Looser actions and work on blocking can help catching skills get better. On the mound, JW has a clean arm action, good balance, and he is aggressive in the zone. A better finish and more glove side lead will help mound effectiveness improve. Offensively, JW has a square set-up, good bat speed, and he swings in good rhythm. He swings on plane, has a line drive approach, and hits off a firm front side. If JW can keep a more still head and continue to work on timing, hitting will spike.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
