01/18/2019 - 2019 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Kai continues to shine on the diamond. Behind the plate, pop times were in the 2.10 range with accuracy and on line carry on his throws. Feet are active, working in line to his target as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. He plays with a ton of energy and shows the ability to handle a pitching staff with his receiving / blocking skills. At the plate, he continues to shine. Hands are quick and work inside the baseball as he utilizes all fields. Barrel accuracy is a plus with baseball jumping off the bat when centered with gap-to-gap pop. A projectable catcher, Kai has lot of potential and will get looks from the collegiate coaches as he continues to progress his game.

02/25/2018 - College PREP - Santa Barbara, CA Kai showed catching improvements at his last workout in Santa Barbara. Both blocking and receiving numbers improved to 55's. Kai is a strong, athletic catcher, he sits in low, and presents his glove well. He has quick/fluid actions, tracks well, and deadens the ball softly. Kai has a short/quick arm action to 2nd base with pop times in the low 2's. In the OF, Kai works behind the ball well, his feet are fluid and active, and he takes good angles. He closes in quickly on the ball and has carry to his target. Offensively, Kai is a strong hitter and the ball jumps off of his bat. He has a compact swing, fast bat speed, and he works the ball gap to gap.

01/12/2018 - 2018 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Kai has proven himself time and time again, competing at a high level with all the intangibles. He showed his vocal leadership and his ability to command the field from behind the dish. He has quiet actions, receiving with strong hands, and sat comfortably with good flexion. Offensively, the LHH was balanced and showed good rhythm to hit. His lower half worked through to help accelerate his barrel that came through on a direct path to contact. Overall - Kai is a strong academic backstop that will lead a team at the next level.

06/24/2017 - Omaha National World Series - Session 2 (Ages 14-18) Kai continues to show as a prospect on the diamond. Be-hind the plate, he works to get rid of the baseball quickly as he gains ground through a clean transfer / exchange. Pop times showed in the 2.10 range with accuracy / carry on his throws. He tracks the ball well and sticks balls in zone, displaying a soft glove action. He utilizes his body well and is a wall behind the plate. At the plate, he con-tinues to shine. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Barrel is whipped through the zone as he connects with gap-to-gap pop. A talented prospect - he will make things happen both behind the dish as well as with the bat.

01/13/2017 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Kai continues to show improvements and a promising future on the diamond. At the plate, he continues to show as a switch hitter but has really improved his abilities from the left side where he projects best, showing outstanding hitting / power potential. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive swing path. He has strength in his swing with plus barrel accuracy with power showing best to the pull side. At the event, he was 2 for 5 with a 3B. Behind the plate, feet are active as he gains ground and works through a clean / transfer exchange as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Pop times showed in the 2.10 range. Throws display accuracy and on line carry through his target. Hands are soft as he lets the ball travel and tracks well, sticking in the zone. He shows off his athletic abilities through the blocking process with tool improving as he works to get down quicker.

10/26/2016 - Under Armour SoCal Classic, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One Kai has made notable adjustments on both sides of the ball, as he again impressed scouts with his overall play and leadership skills as a catcher. Behind the plate, he showed proper footwork on high pops, his blocks, and on his throws to 2nd base. His throws to 2nd were very quick (2.01 best pop time) as he gained ground, kept his arm stroke short and made accurate throws down. Offensively, he showed good balance and rhythm, as he took a short/controlled stride, loaded his hands on time and took a clean swing, which allowed him to spray line drives to all fields consistently. All in all, Kai shows all the skills necessary to compete at the next level and will be on the radar of collegiate coaches as he continues to grow on the field.

07/20/2016 - Under Armour Southwest Championships 16U, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One Kai is a hardworking catcher who is very coachable and is willing to make adjustments to be the best player he can be. At the plate, he continues to show as a switch hitter but has really improved his abilities from the left side where he projects best. Hands are quick (82 mph exit velocity) flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel with the baseball jumping off the bat when centered. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Behind the plate, pop times showed in the 2.02 range as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Receiving and blocking skills show as quality tools that will play well at the next level. He shows great leadership traits behind the dish as he is very vocal and handles a pitching staff well. Overall, Kai is a very talented prospect who has the potential to contribute at the next level.

06/18/2016 - Omaha National World Series - Session 1 Kai continues to show a promising future on the diamond. Behind the plate, his pop times showed a range in the 2.10 range as he gets rid of the baseball quickly with life / carry / accuracy on his throws. Pop times will continue to improve as he gains more arm strength through a long toss program. Kai's receiving / blocking skills show as outstanding tools that will play well at the next level. At the plate, he continues to show as a switch hitter with similar abilities from both sides. His hands are quick (81 mph exit velocity) and work through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields. His barrel accuracy is a plus and he has strength in his swing with the baseball exploding off the bat when centered. Kai's mental makeup is a plus as he has a great personality, is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be. He will get looks from the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities.

06/05/2016 - College PREP - Bakersfield, CA Kai continues to put his talents on display. This young backstop has a solid all-around skill-set. Defensively, he sits in with flexion and presents a low target. He is quick laterally to body up pitches in the dirt. Throws to 2B are on the bag - pop times remain in the low 2's. As a hitter - he shows similarly from both sides. He gets hand separation on his load, fires the barrel on a level path and squares the ball up. A 2019 grad - Kai has upside with a bright future ahead of him in the game.

12/13/2015 - College PREP - Thousand Oaks, CA Kai continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities with a promising future on the diamond. Behind the plate, hands / feet work well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly with carry, and on line accuracy to his throws. Receiving / blocking skills show as quality tools that will play well at the next level. Offensively, he continues to show as a switch hitter with similar abilities from both sides. He shows an aggressive approach and lets the ball travel as he works to stay inside the ball. He makes consistent contact with power numbers improving as he builds overall body strength. With 4 years to further develop, Kai has a ton of potential and is a player to follow.

09/30/2015 - Arizona Freshman/Sophomore Fall Classic Kai continues to show well on the diamond. He is very coachable and has a willingness to learn. Behind the dish, he sits in with athletic actions as wide base and flexion. He receives with a soft mitt yet firm wrist, sticking pitches in the zone. Exchange is smooth as he gains ground and puts his throws on the 2B bag. As a hitter - Kai steps into the box with a purpose. He remains aggressive early in the count and works to jumps of 1st pitch FB's. He engages his lower 1/2 well and drives the ball on a line. Guzman has skills with still a ton of time to develop. This switch hitting catcher has a bright future ahead of him in the game.

05/31/2015 - College PREP - Bakersfield, CA Kai is an athletic switch-hitting backstop. With the bat, he currently shows more naturally from the left side. He has fluid rhythm and works back into a strong loaded position. Swing path is short/direct to and through the zone. He engages his lower 1/2 well and squares the ball up well. Behind the dish, Kai sits in well with flexion as he tracks pitches into his mitt. He has a clean transfer putting accurate throws on the bag (pop times of 2.25). Working to gain more ground toward 2B along with increasing his arm strength through a long toss program will help to improve his skills behind the plate. Kai is a very talented player who has a ton of upside and a bright future ahead of him.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
