01/18/2019 - 2019 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Kalai is an athletic 2B prospect who showed well at the Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament. In the field, Kalai shows efficient footwork and gets into an athletic position. He fields the ball with soft hands and throws with a quick arm, keeping his throws accurate to his target. At the plate, this RHH sets up in an athletic stance and takes a short stride. He gets his hands activated on time and drives his lower half through well. He takes a level swing with decent bat speed, leading to solid pop to the opposite field. Overall, Kalai is a talented prospect who has the potential to contribute at the next level.

01/21/2018 - College PREP - Kapolei (Honolulu), HI Kalai continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and he has a promising future on the diamond. At the plate, hitting / power potential have improved through an open setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields and he has strength in his swing with power showing best to the pull side. He shows a feel for the barrel with the baseball jumping off the bat when centered. In the MIF, defensive abilities are now outstanding as he displays smooth / clean actions. Hands are soft / clean and presents well out front. Feet are aggressive as he attacks balls and plays through with his body. Range is a plus as he moves well laterally and covers a lot of ground. Throws are accurate with carry across the diamond as he gets rid of the baseball quickly.

01/29/2017 - National Tryout Plus - Kapolei (Honolulu), HI Kalai is an athletic, well-built SS prospect who graduates in 2019. His speed is his top tool as he creates havoc on the base paths, stretching hits and stealing bases, and in the field with extended range. His feet are efficient, working from a solid base to move laterally and field with ease to both sides of his body. He takes good angles and fields with momentum to his target to make on target DP feeds and throws to first. At the dish, he keeps it simple and compact with a middle approach and feel for the barrel. He works on a level path to the ball with quick hands and is able to make consistent, square contact to spray hits to all fields. Getting better separation between his hips and hands will allow him to explode to the ball and stay back on breaking balls. Kalai is a prospect to watch as he grows and progresses.

01/31/2016 - National Tryout Plus - Kapolei (Honolulu), HI Kalai continues to progress. Defensively in the MIF, he shows active footwork and moves well on the balls of his feet. He works around the GB and stays low (from the ground-up) moving smoothly through the ball. As a hitter - Kalai has a square setup with rhythm to load. He swings on a short/direct path and barrels the ball up - using the middle of the field. Added power will come as he works to create more extension through the ball at contact. Only a 2019 grad - Kalai has tools with still a ton of time to develop.

01/25/2015 - National Tryout - Kapolei (Honolulu), HI Kalai is a talented middle infielder graduating in 2019. This young 2B'man fields the ball cleanly with smooth, athletic actions. His transfer is quick and soft with good FTWK no the DP. At the plate, this righty squares himself in the box, swings with some balance and fluidity, and his hands show a direct path to the ball. Kalai is a natural ball player that will see a bright future.

12/20/2014 - Baseball Factory Winter Classic - Session 1 Kalai proved to be a hard worker as well as a great teammate. Offensively, this RHH shows a square setup with good balance. He has rhythm to load and waits for his pitch, tracking the ball into the zone. Swing path is level as he connects and drives the ball up the middle of the field. Working to get more extension through his finish will result in increased pop off of his barrel. At 2B, he has quick footwork and hustles into position behind the GB. Hands work well as he can pick it. He gathers well and has a clean exchange to throw. Working more on the balls of his feet will allow for quicker lateral movements. Kalai (only a 2019 grad) still has a ton of time to progress on the diamond.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
